I'm curious. What does everyone think the root cause/fix for increased shootings in the US is?
So. I've been having a big discussion on facebook about mass shootings. Most people seem to just take the stance of, ermahgod guns and seem to ignore everything else. I believe that yes, we need more gun control-not ban-control but i can't believe that the weapons of choice are the core of this issue. Note: I think at this point an all out ban in the US is impossible. We can't stop there. Hell, maybe it shouldn't even begin there. There is more wrong with our society and it seems like we ignore it.
What are we doing to cause these kids to snap in a way/frequency that we never saw as kids.
Please see comment for my whole ramble, had to cut it down for size limits
What say you SE'ers? Is it the guns, is it something else, is it a combination? What is your thought on the core of the issue?

quote [ The jury in Bill Cosby's retrial found the TV icon guilty of all three counts of aggravated indecent assault on Thursday for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in a Philadelphia suburb in 2004.
The 80-year-old comedian faces up to 10 years in prison on each count, but would likely serve them concurrently. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled, and he remains out on bail. ]
Cosby found guilty on all 3 counts.

quote [ AFTER MORE THAN a century making vehicles for humans to drive, General Motors has ripped the heart out of its latest ride, and is now holding the grisly spectacle up for all the world to see: A car with no steering wheel. And it plans to put a fleet of these newfangled things to work in a taxi-like service, somewhere in the US, next year. ]
I'm ready. I would love to be able to work on my laptop, use vr, or read a book while my car drives me to my destination. While it does say it will launch next year, they still have to get around the law requiring steering wheels in all cars.

Choose my mod, and thus yours
I've historically subscribed at silver level but decided to reup at gold this time around which comes with a custom mod. So instead of choosing one myself, i leave it to the community. Suggest a mod. I'll leave it open for a while and at the end see if everyone can vote on one that they like the best. (Maybe have people choose among the top 5 most upvoted at the end). I'll try to use whatever that mod may be on any posts that seem applicable and thus make it available to all to use.

How did everyone spend their New Years Eve?
In my early years i partied hard and for days. Now I prefer a nice quiet night in with the family, lucky if i make it until midnight. How does everyone celebrate?
As a side question, when does everyone take down holiday decorations (if you put them up)?

quote [ In 2018, playing video games obsessively might lead to a diagnosis of a mental health disorder.
In the beta draft of its forthcoming 11th International Classification of Diseases, the World Health Organization includes "gaming disorder" in its list of mental health conditions. The WHO defines the disorder as a "persistent or recurrent" behavior pattern of "sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning."
The disorder is characterized by "impaired control" with increasing priority given to gaming and "escalation," despite "negative consequences." ]
I can see the abuse of this now. How would one define professional video game player vs mental disorder? Are they the same?

quote [ OTTAWA – Canada is one step closer to the accidental legalization of cannibalism after the House of Commons passed a typo-ridden Bill C-45, formerly known as The Cannabis Act.
“I think no one wanted to be the one to point out the error,” MP Sara Anderson said. “We all thought someone else would do it, and then they called the vote, and here we are, all voting to legalize cannibalism.”
“It’s just one of those things.” ]
Who was it? Step forward and claim your prize (or punishment), depending on how you look at it.

quote [ In May 2017, researchers at Google Brain announced the creation of AutoML, an artificial intelligence (AI) that's capable of generating its own AIs.
More recently, they decided to present AutoML with its biggest challenge to date, and the AI that can build AI created a 'child' that outperformed all of its human-made counterparts. ]
Its here and its advancing. The only thing left to do is foster its development and come up with a safe way to do so.

quote [ WJAX reports companies such as 23andMe and Ancestry would be willing to give police access to your DNA if they have a warrant.
Even more, police could also obtain DNA from a family member to make a "familial match. ]
While this is definitely worrisome to me, i find the healthcare side of it more horrifying. I'm waiting for the first case of an insurance company getting their hands on these records and denying a medical claim, stating the condition was known to the person and they didn't seek treatment.
