Just How Big Is The Larsen C Iceberg?

quote [ It's hard to imagine the Larsen C iceberg. These images help make it clear how massive it is...
With an area the size of Delaware and a volume of 277 cubic miles, its measurements boggle the mind. ]

That's a lot of ice cubes. I need a whisky.

Martin Landau, Oscar-winning actor, dead at 89

quote [ Martin Landau, a star of the 1960s television series Mission: Impossible who made a late-career comeback with an Academy Award-winning performance in the 1994 film Ed Wood, died on Saturday at age 89, his publicist says. ]

I remember him from Space:1999 and Mission Impossible as well as his movies. 2017 is the spawn of 2016...

In Texas, the Bodies of Migrants Who Perished in the Desert Provide Clues to the Living

quote [ Scientists at a forensics lab study human decomposition in an effort to identify the remains of bodies recovered along migration routes near the U.S.-Mexico border. ]

I found this moving and informative. I always wonder about the story behind apparently tragic events e.g. seeing a child's toy on the side of a highway.

Is America Heading for a Civil War? -

quote [ A year ago, Ross Douthat also wondered whether American society was unravelling. Is America heading for a civil war, and what would be the global implications of such an event? Only ten years ago, such a question would have been laughed at, but it is now all too common. ]

When Trump won, I opined that there could very well be armed conflict between the rich and the poor. The law would be on the side of the haves and the have-nots would wage a guerrilla action—becoming, in essence, terrorists. Northern Ireland provided an effective model for my thinking.

Fake news: you ain’t seen nothing yet

quote [ EARLIER this year Françoise Hardy, a French musician, appeared in a YouTube video (see link). She is asked, by a presenter off-screen, why President Donald Trump sent his press secretary, Sean Spicer, to lie about the size of the inauguration crowd. First, Ms Hardy argues. Then she says Mr Spicer “gave alternative facts to that”. It’s all a little odd... ]

Coupled with the "dumbing down" (through stress, lack of education etc.) of the general populace, this is frightening. (full article in extended)

The secret lives of IS fighters - BBC News

quote [ Three young IS militants lie dead on the banks of the River Tigris. They have left behind photos and documents revealing their private lives. ]

IMO, a well-considered piece. This BBC reporter has taken the time to look into the lives of three IS fighters killed in an airstrike. The piece doesn't lionise the men and it shows the stress that the general public are under. I agonised a bit over a thumbnail but could find none that were truly appropriate so there is none.

Beauty, Equality, And The Problem With Calling Everything 'Sexist'

quote [ Now, for a man, fictional or real, to say of a woman that she is “still beautiful” at a certain age is without doubt to reveal a crass male sensibility and to express a trite sentiment. But such a statement – an aesthetic judgment, actually – is “sexist” only under the greatly expanded meaning this term has acquired since the revolution in consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s. ]

Cat, meet pigeons. but i do agree with his main point.

The idea of creating a new universe in the lab is no joke

quote [ Near the end, Linde made a seemingly flippant suggestion that our Universe itself might have been knocked together by an alien ‘physicist hacker’. The paper’s referees objected to this ‘dirty joke’; religious people might be offended that scientists were aiming to steal the feat of universe-making out of the hands of God, they worried. ]

Given how easily lab animals are dispatched and disposed of, I suspect that human-made universes will be treated much the same.

(Very) Late breaking news...Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid didn't die in a Bolivian gunfight

quote [ According to Lula Betenson, Cassidy’s youngest sister, Cassidy and the Sundance Kid didn’t die in Bolivia. Betenson is the author of "Butch Cassidy, My Brother." She wrote the book in 1975. ]

It's kind of blown my mind that I saw the film in the cinema in '69 and his sister was still alive at the time.

Hawaiian pizza inventor Sam Panopoulos dies aged 83

quote [ Sam Panopoulos, who has died aged 83, leaves a legacy that has delighted, confused and appalled diners worldwide. Often at the same time.
Panopoulos is the Canadian man who invented Hawaiian pizza, a dish so divisive it led to a presidential outburst this year. ]

I prefer capicollo and pineapple but every now and again, I'll have a Hawaiian pizza...but with lots of chill flakes.
