French Court Sides With Artist Who Exhibited Her Vagina at the Louvre, Deeming It Non-Sexual

quote [ Deborah De Robertis has been cleared of charges of sexual exhibitionism, but ordered to undertake 35 hours of community service for assault. ]

A bit more literal than say, Georgia O'Keefe...
There are some manifestations of art that i just don't get.

Cassini: The Grand Finale: Latest Status

quote [ Cassini has completed its mission at Saturn. As predicted, the spacecraft lost contact with Earth at 4:55 a.m. PDT (7:55 a.m. EDT). ]

I'm reminded of the ST: Voyager episode where the ship was trapped in the gravity well of a planet with accelerated time. The character played by Daniel Dae Kim has grown up with Voyager being a part of the night sky and is watching when the ship leaves. The wistful sadness portrayed by the actor is sort of how I feel...

Patient Plays Saxophone While Surgeons Remove Brain Tumor

quote [ Music is not only a major part of Dan Fabbio’s life, as a music teacher it is his livelihood. So when doctors discovered a tumor located in the part of his brain responsible for music function, he began a long journey that involved a team of physicians, scientists, and a music professor and culminated with him awake and playing a saxophone as surgeons operated on his brain. ]

Wilder Penfield started with touching parts of the brain and triggering memories. Now, having surgeons consult a music theorist while the patient plays open skulled is pretty mind-boggling!

Looks like China had a similar problem to the UK...the latter with people running for Parliament under long, strange names (c.f. Monty Python—Kevin Lim Bim Bim Biscuit Olay Biscuit-Barrel :Silly Party)

Just How Big Is The Larsen C Iceberg?

quote [ It's hard to imagine the Larsen C iceberg. These images help make it clear how massive it is...
With an area the size of Delaware and a volume of 277 cubic miles, its measurements boggle the mind. ]

That's a lot of ice cubes. I need a whisky.

Martin Landau, Oscar-winning actor, dead at 89

quote [ Martin Landau, a star of the 1960s television series Mission: Impossible who made a late-career comeback with an Academy Award-winning performance in the 1994 film Ed Wood, died on Saturday at age 89, his publicist says. ]

I remember him from Space:1999 and Mission Impossible as well as his movies. 2017 is the spawn of 2016...

In Texas, the Bodies of Migrants Who Perished in the Desert Provide Clues to the Living

quote [ Scientists at a forensics lab study human decomposition in an effort to identify the remains of bodies recovered along migration routes near the U.S.-Mexico border. ]

I found this moving and informative. I always wonder about the story behind apparently tragic events e.g. seeing a child's toy on the side of a highway.

Is America Heading for a Civil War? -

quote [ A year ago, Ross Douthat also wondered whether American society was unravelling. Is America heading for a civil war, and what would be the global implications of such an event? Only ten years ago, such a question would have been laughed at, but it is now all too common. ]

When Trump won, I opined that there could very well be armed conflict between the rich and the poor. The law would be on the side of the haves and the have-nots would wage a guerrilla action—becoming, in essence, terrorists. Northern Ireland provided an effective model for my thinking.

Fake news: you ain’t seen nothing yet

quote [ EARLIER this year Françoise Hardy, a French musician, appeared in a YouTube video (see link). She is asked, by a presenter off-screen, why President Donald Trump sent his press secretary, Sean Spicer, to lie about the size of the inauguration crowd. First, Ms Hardy argues. Then she says Mr Spicer “gave alternative facts to that”. It’s all a little odd... ]

Coupled with the "dumbing down" (through stress, lack of education etc.) of the general populace, this is frightening. (full article in extended)
