What Happened When A Trump Supporter Challenged Me About the Wall

quote [ A conservative challenged liberal Facebook friends to “make a case, not based on emotion” against Trump’s wall. ]

You'll never guess how this ends. Reality has a well-known liberal bias.

The short version of the argument I like: Have you ever seen a map of Texas? Do you know why the border with Mexico looks the way it does?

The Bipartisan Group That’s Not Afraid of Partisanship

quote [ Rather than seeking a centrist compromise, Better Angels is treating division as a given—and trying to foster conversations across it. ]

Every now and then I read something like this and think that maybe there is a way forward.

The Most Sobering Thing about the Racial Dot Map

quote [ I was able to perfectly predict where a correctional facility was on located, based on the odd concentrations I was finding on the racial dot map. ]

Kind of a follow-on to my population mountains post, here's another interesting perspective using computer representations of demographic data.

Dirty dealing in the $175 billion Amazon Marketplace

quote [ These schemes really require the mind of someone whose depravity knows no bounds. ]

Facehook isn't the only tech titan shitshow you should stop using.

Population Mountains

quote [ This is a story about how to perceive the population of cities. ]

Pretty cool perspective... and a little alarming to see some of the growth rates. Stop having sex, losers.

12 Incredible Home Libraries with Hidden Doors

quote [ Home libraries are already magical places with numerous new worlds in which to escape. Add a hidden door and you’ve got something extra special. We’ve scoured the web and found fantastic home libraries with hidden doors to realms unknown! ]

I love this stuff. I'd probably buy a house if I could just so I could do this kind of thing.

I went with SE Book Club instead of Literature because this seems more, um, book-clubby than content-driven, but while we're at it I nominate Sapiens by Yuval Harari, as I think it would make for some interesting discussion - anyone read it or reading it or up for reading it?

This ancient Greek ship is the oldest intact shipwreck ever discovered

quote [ The ill-fated trading ship has spent 2,400 years at the bottom of the Black Sea. ]

I love this shit. It's called the Black Sea because below about 200 meters deep - 90% of the volume - the water is an anoxic dead zone, which means any shipwrecks beyond that depth are preserved in brine, untouched by microbial decomposition.

An Artist Painted A Bunch Of Famous Celeb Men Going Down On Women And It's Really Something

quote [ Not that we have to tell you, but NSFW. ]

It's Buzzfeed but hey, it's art! Or porn. Or artsy porn. Porny art!

A Lawsuit Tests the Limits of Anonymous Speech

quote [ A journalist wants to know who accused him of rape in a shared spreadsheet. What are the implications of outing or protecting his accusers? ]

I think Stephen Elliott is a douchebag, but his lawsuit raises some troubling issues. How do you balance the very reasonable desire of many women to warn each other about predators against the very real potential for that warning to be undeservedly weaponized? There are people who argue that given the enormous problem of sexual harassment and assault, a little collateral damage is no big deal, but that sounds to me an awful lot like "all animals are equal and some are more equal than others". This article does a good job of spelling out the different implications.

UN Says Climate Genocide Is Coming. It’s Actually Worse Than That.

quote [ But it is, actually, worse than that — considerably worse. That is because the new report’s worst-case scenario is, actually, a best case. In fact, it is a beyond-best-case scenario. What has been called a genocidal level of warming is already our inevitable future. The question is how much worse than that it will get. ]

At what point do we have permission to kill Republicans as a matter of self-defense?

(Not a repost, but I realized after posting it might have been better as a comment on steele's post than as a follow-up. I think it's pretty important, but feel free to downmod if it makes you feel less depressed.)
