A Look Into Later: 27 Ways To Tell A Story In VR

quote [ Guess what? We have virtual reality now.

Various companies have released goggles, motion tracking technology, omni-directional treadmills. ]

I like it, a nice little look at different ways we may see developers use VR to present their stories. Personally, I've been thinking about doing Ride VR and trying to make 360 videos out of it for youtube.

This may be too many ways.

What cam gear do you use for ride vr?

I don't mean like recording a video of an actual ride, but rather you create a virtual ride in Unity like a rollercoaster or a story based ride like you would find at Disney. Small world, peter pan, pooh, etc. From there, since your player doesn't move around, you could use 360 capture plugin to record the whole experience as a video and upload it to youtube.

You could do a 360 capture of a ride, but I'm not familiar enough with the equipment beyond the cheap 360 samsung cams or google's Jump rigs. What's being done with light fields, photogrammetry and volumetric video nowadays is becoming very impressive, but I don't have those kind of toys just yet. Just a kinect and some phone cameras. My one shot at a photogrammetry scan of a mecha model was just giant humanoid blob. :D

Maybe a VR version of living in the woods with your cat and working on a web site?

Plot twist: Cat runs the website, human has been stuck in VR since 2014 trying to warn ‘people’ of the dangers of VR. Can’t figure out why no one gets it.

Double twist: Human is actually a ghost.

Ride VR is the most conservative option; it's the most obvious extension of the traditional entertainment paradigm, maintains a strict separation of the producer and consumer roles, requires the least amout of effort on the part of the consumers, offers just enough illusory freedom to seem like a new medium ("This passive, scripted, on-the-rails experience is totally different from TV and movies, because you can look around!"), and is the easiest way to ensure they don't accidentally miss any advertisements, product placement, etc. Obviously it will be the most popular.
