NASA fungus problem puts theory of 'Martian mushrooms' on toast

quote [ ...And not just any funguses, but some species capable of producing amino acids that are usually considered to be extra-terrestrial when found in meteorites. ]

There certainly have been some odd pictures taken on Mars, but nothing you wouldn't expect after taking thousands of photos of billion year old rock and dust formations. "Mars Donut," in extended.

She found a dating app on her boyfriend’s phone. Then she bought a samurai sword.

quote [ With her boyfriend finally asleep, Emily Javier reached for the samurai sword she had secretly taped earlier to the side of the bed. ]

I couldn't not post this. Full text in extended, because WaPo.

A Better Way to Look at Most Every Political Issue

quote [ Americans would be less alienated from one another and solve problems more easily if they recognized one little-noticed distinction in policy debates. ]

This is intentionally tagged as People instead of Politics, since it's more about framing and better communication than about any particular issue or position.

Here’s how Google Chrome’s new ad blocker works

quote [ Google Chrome will soon begin to block ads on some websites by default. I dug up some more information about how it will work. ...Google have announced that their Google Chrome web browser will block every ad on websites that are not compliant with the Better Ads Standards by default. ]

This might shift web advertising and directed support into a new phase. While obnoxious advertising sucks, blocking them is a significant part of why I took up paying folks via Patreon. There's a nice breakdown of the initial set of standards in extended.

Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan Chase to create independent healthcare co. for employees

quote [ Three major employers, Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan Chase, announced Tuesday they were partnering to create an independent company aimed at reining in health care costs for their employees. ]

This is a follow up to my previous post about a not-for-profit generic drug company forming to fight rising health costs. Makes sense that the business giants would take the whole healthcare tar-baby in house at some point. Text in extended because WaPo.

One Of The World's Rarest Fish Is A Little Less Rare Than We Thought

quote [ The red handfish, named for hand-shaped fins on the sides of its body, doesn't really swim — it walks slowly along the sea floor. A new population of the striking creature has been found off Tasmania. ]

Just a little good news to kick off the weekend.

World's 2k top billionaires could wipe out extreme poverty with 14% of what they gained last year

quote [ Last year saw the biggest increase in billionaires in history, one more every two days. Billionaires saw their wealth increase by $762bn in 12 months. This huge increase could have ended global extreme poverty seven times over. 82% of all wealth created in the last year went to the top 1%, while the bottom 50% saw no increase at all. ]

Link is to Oxfam's annual report on inequality. I know I sound like a broken record, but seriously, the filthy rich can stay filthy rich and still eradicate poverty. It is not a zero sum game. Categorized as Business because there's no Economics.

The full paper is 76 pages, otherwise I would have included it.

You will love this conversation with Jaron Lanier, but I can’t describe it

quote [ Ever wondered what Richard Feynman was like on acid? Lanier can tell you. ]

Jaron Zepel Lanier is an American computer philosophy writer, computer scientist, visual artist, and composer of classical music. A pioneer in the field of virtual reality, Lanier and Thomas G. Zimmerman left Atari in 1985 to found VPL Research, Inc., the first company to sell VR goggles and gloves.

This post is mostly for @steele. It's a great podcast interview by Ezra Klein with Lanier. The post title is Klein's.

SE Ranking

quote [ SE Ranking is a dynamically growing company that develops the best-of-breed SEO software that offers all standard SEO tools along with special features that could not be found on any other SEO platform. ]

"Website owners love how simple yet powerful our SEO platform is."
"SEO gurus have all SEO and extra unique features on one platform."

It took me a few minutes and some googling to even figure out what "SEO" means.
I was going to post this as a "quickie," but that category seems to be gone.

Leading US Health Systems Announce Plans to Develop a Not-for-profit Generic Drug Company

quote [ Intermountain Healthcare and other US health systems form not-for-profit generic drug company to help patients by ending shortages and reducing prices ]

We really are the last "civilized" nation holding out. Perhaps the walls will finally be breached from within the industry itself, instead of from without. Ars Technica's take on it in extended.
