Artist Vandalizes Virtual Koons Sculpture, Questioning Silicon Valleys Fake Public Space

quote [ The vandalism here is more symbolic, but it still raises necessary questions about control and privatization of digital real estate, and how massive corporations can co-opt this endless canvas of pixelated pseudo-reality. ]

Seems like there will be some kind of ubiquitous Second Life AR overlay, eventually, with the equivalent of endless Photoshop layers you choose to show or hide.

The world’s oldest scientific satellite is still in orbit

quote [ Launched in March 1958, this grapefruit-sized shiny metal sphere was boosted into a high elliptical orbit. And it’s still there, passing between 650 and 3,800km (406 to 2,375 miles) from the Earth. ]

Remember when a cutting edge research satellite could be installed on the launch vehicle outdoors by a few guys in jackets instead of in a hermetically sealed clean room?

Inside South Park's Nosulus Rift virtual aroma unit

quote [ This is a virtual reality aroma enhancement unit that was released to promote a game called The Fractured But Whole. In the game the characters use the power of flatulence in combat and this unit responds accordingly by forcefully emitting the aroma of a fart directly in your face. ]

This is really just a quickie by one of my favorite youtubers, Big Clive, but I couldn't help myself and had to post it to the VR/AR category. Clive is an electrical engineer who tears down cheap electronics to see how they work and how well/horribly they are designed, and often mods them, with a particular affinity for lighting. Plus he's a scotsman, and has a great accent.

Various Fractured But Whole links in extended.

The NASA Tournament Labs Challenges: Govt. outsourcing skilled labor to foreign countries

quote [ The NASA Tournament Lab and Freelancer have teamed up to help crowdsource solutions to the most complex problems being faced by astronauts on the cutting edge of space exploration. ]

One of my colleagues just found this. NASA is one of our best clients and we have several longterm contracts with them. They have begun outsourcing a lot of what we do for them to places like freelancer.com. These are highly skilled jobs sent overseas for less than 10% of what it would cost domestically.

It's the reality of the gig economy, no matter how skilled you may be. Companies (and governments) are turning into just a bunch of managers, managing contractors, including other managers.

Laurie Anderson Introduces VR Installation That Lets You Fly Through Stories

quote [ “It has a certain tactility and made-by-hand kind of thing… this is gritty and drippy and filled with dust and dirt.” Chalkroom, she says, "is a library of stories, and no one will ever find them all.” ]

I've been fascinated by Anderson ever since I was 12 and my oldest sister, a college radio DJ, played Big Science for me. A year later, her Mr. Heartbreak tour was my first live concert. I think I've still got a bit of a crush on her. Hmm, now that Lou is gone..? Link to full aforementioned albums via youtube in extended. "Captain says..."

Breakthrough in understanding the origin of the ageing process

quote [ Previous studies had found genes that encourage ageing while still being essential for development, but these 30 genes represent some of the first found promoting ageing specifically only in old worms. “Considering we tested only 0.05% of all the genes in a worm this suggests there could be many more of these genes out there to find,” says Jonathan. ]

Another completely unattributed but interesting article I originally found on goodshit, then tracked to its source. It took five seconds with google. Why do I feel so compelled to give them their due? Come on, Fred! Anyone know if his ancient Hotmail email account still works?

Edon Muhaxheri 'revives' first Albanian alphabet of Naum Veqilharxhi

quote [ "I have a special passion for Albanian culture. During research for my thesis I wanted to connect my work with Automaton and culture. I challenged my self with one of the most complicated Automaton, the one who writes" Muhaxheri shows some details for KultPlus. ]

I wish there was video of the automaton actually drawing. My typography geek friends are going to love this.

The 2017 Ig Noble Prizes have been awarded

quote [ OBSTETRICS PRIZE — [SPAIN] — Marisa López-Teijón, Álex García-Faura, Alberto Prats-Galino, and Luis Pallarés Aniorte, for showing that a developing human fetus responds more strongly to music that is played electromechanically inside the mother's vagina than to music that is played electromechanically on the mother's belly. ]

Not many standouts this year, but still worth checking out.

NASA photos: Hurricane Irma Turns Caribbean Islands Brown

quote [ Hurricane Irma churned across the Atlantic Ocean in September 2017, battering several Caribbean islands before moving on to the Florida Keys and the U.S. mainland. As the clouds cleared over places like the Virgin Islands, the destruction became obvious even from space. ]

August 25th vs. September 10th. Ouch. This gives a good macro view of the destruction. I read someone who lived through it call Irma, "Like a giant lawn mower rolling over the island."

Flamingos In The Men's Room: How Zoos And Aquariums Handle Hurricanes

quote [ Although the netting for that aviary was tested for 150 mph winds," Magill says, "it was not tested to be able to withstand the impact of a mobile home that was picked up in those winds and launched into the aviary like a torpedo. ]

That quote made me think of the Ron White post a few days ago.
