Lens of Time: Building a Butterfly Wing

quote [ Scientists open a window—literally—into a process that normally remains hidden deep inside a butterfly’s chrysalis...For more than 100 years, evolutionary biologists have been working to understand the mechanisms and processes that give rise to some of nature’s most complex designs. This is often slow and painstaking work. Take a close look at the intricate detail of a butterfly wing, and you’ll see the enormity of the challenge. ]

Just a quickie, but the whole biographic.com site is pretty amazing.

Jay Lynch, Underground Comics Creator, Dies at 72

quote [ Mr. Lynch was an artist, writer and satirist employing a retro style and deadpan humor. He was also an archivist of underground comics history... He had a wry, deadpan sense of humor, held strong views about the importance of underground comics, which differentiated themselves from the mainstream through raunchy and grotesque depictions of sex, drugs and violence. ]

The master of Wacky Packs and Garbage Pail Kids among many others including Wild, Cracked and Sick. I had a huge collection of Wacky Pack cards and stickers when I was 10 or so. Wacky Packs archive in extended.

Still Logged In: What AR and VR Can Learn from MMOs

quote [ In this session, Raph Koster (Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, etc.) talks about the social and ethical implications of turning the real world into a virtual world, and how the lessons of massively multiplayer virtual worlds are more relevant than ever. ]

It's an hour long talk, but well worth listening to the whole thing if you are at all interested in virtual communities (including this one).

steele made more than $6 million by threatening Internet users with copyright lawsuits

quote [ Disgraced lawyer pleads guilty; made $6 million filing lawsuits over porn—some of which he filmed... hid their role in making the porn and hid the fact that they had a personal stake in the outcome of the litigation. They subpoenaed Internet service providers to get subscriber information and then sent letters and made phone calls to the victims, threatening them with "enormous financial penalties and public embarrassment unless they agreed to pay a $3,000 settlement fee." ]

No, not that steele. Prenda Law internet porn-troll lawsuits John Steele. Good to see this guy spinning in the wind. Infuriating interview from a few years back in extended. Perhaps there should be a "Legal" category? Marked NSFW just in case. And for the naked troll chicks.

RED Gardens, testing differing gardening methods, long term.

quote [ This RED Gardens Project, Research Education and Development, consists of 6 family scale gardens each one 100m2 (1000sqf) and following a different methodology, or approach to growing vegetables. There is also a larger Black Plot, of about 1000m2 (1/4 acre) which is exploring issues and possibilities of an intermediate scale growing space. ]

Just a new-ish youtube channel that I really appreciate. I'm his second Patreon supporter, and want to give him some exposure.

Have The Majors Given Up On Canada’s Oil Sands?

quote [ Canada’s oil sands may see billions of barrels of oil being permanently left in the ground due to the incredibly high price of production... The oil, often found as a sticky, viscous semi-solid known as bitumen, requires extra steps to extract and process before it can be shipped. ]

Well, at least we'll have bitumen for mummifying our god-kings.

In December, Spicer said barring media access is what a ‘dictatorship’ does. Today, he barred media access.

quote [ White House press secretary Sean Spicer barred reporters from several large media outlets from participating in a scheduled press briefing Friday. Two months ago, in a panel discussion, he insisted that open access for the media is “what makes a democracy a democracy versus a dictatorship.” ]

Washington Post, so full text in extended.

World's tiniest hammer helps researchers see what happens when force is applied to brain cells

quote [ What happens on the other side of our skulls when we hit our heads? If we can bruise, scrape and cut the relatively tough tissue of our skin and muscle with an impact, what happens to the cells that comprise the spongy, gelatinous matter of our brains? ]

Cassini: Mission to Saturn: Raw Images

quote [ "This shit is fucking real." - NASA (No actual text to quote.) ]

Link takes you to a gallery of raw NASA Cassini images. This is a recent photo of Saturn's moon, Mimas, not an 18" plaster model. The stuff that keeps pouring in from the Cassini mission continues to blow my mind. High res version plus surprising other side of Mimas in Extended.
