Soweto Style - Roads & Kingdoms

quote [ SOWETO, South Africa— Tolouse is wearing three pairs of trousers. The bottom pair is solid black, the second a violet floral pattern, and on top is a copper coin print that matches his turtleneck shirt. It’s April 26, the eve of Freedom Day in South Africa, marking 20 years since the former apartheid nation first held open and democratic elections. ]

It's not the clothes, it's how you wear them.

One Nation, Divided By A Common Language

quote [ Thanks to the internet, the American language seems to be exploding at an almost unclockable pace. Polyglot social media has exposed American English, with its historically promiscuous embrace of new idioms, to more digital pidgins, foreign words, microdialects, pictograms, neologisms, and cryptic symbols than any one language user can ever expect to brook. ]

This is mostly a test of the "prep post" system. I hope you find it interesting, anyway.

Comparing Donald Trump and Barack Obamas Inaugural Crowds

quote [ He campaigned on the huge crowd sizes, but the turnout for the inauguration of President Donald Trump appears to be smaller than that of his predecessor as measured by side-by-side photos of the two events. ]

Just a quickie shout box supplement. Boston and Chicago crowds in extended. Crazy-big.

Cancer and Evolution

quote [ Evolutionary theory “makes sense” of cancer, giving us critical insight into how it works. This has become particularly clear in recent years. Now, we can sequence all the genes in a patient’s cancer, and see how they change over time as cancer evolves. Cancer evolves with the same evolutionary mechanisms that drive the evolution of new species. ]

Quick fix to a re-post. Full text of NYT Chelsea Manning article still in extended, by request.

AMC Teaming With James Cameron On Docu-Series About The History Of Sci-Fi

quote [ I liked the special effects, but I really loved the ideas and the questions behind them: How will the world end? Will technology destroy us? What does it mean to be human? These are subjects sci-fi has never been afraid to tackle. - James Cameron ]

Someone else's comment: "I love that Jim will focus on the big QUESTIONS other fiction often avoids. We do not need another chronology of SF authors, no point to that."

Washington Post Makes Egregious Cover Photo Error

quote [ As far as typos and editorial errors go, this is a big one, particularly considering the cultural context. The question is: even if it was entirely an innocent mistake, what preconceptions does it indicate? ]

How Many Famous People Will Die IN 2017?

quote [ Many people think that 2016 was particularly bad, but data tells us that it is not an exception. In fact, we should expect more famous people to die in 2017 than in 2016. Why? The answer is simple: because the number of famous people has increased over time. ]

This is a relatively short analysis of the increasing rate of famous people deaths, written by a team at the MIT Media Lab Center for Research in Social Complexity. Apparently the MIT page is causing some folks issues, so the full text in extended. It doesn't carry quite the same punch without the charts and graphs, though.
