Sega launches free retro game collection for iPhone and Android

quote [ Sega is bringing some of its best retro games to your smartphone. Today the company announced a new service called Sega Forever, which is essentially a lineup of classic games from the company that will be available on both iOS and Android. Each game will be available for free — you can pay $1.99 to turn off ads — and will include modern features like cloud saves, Bluetooth controller support, and online leaderboards. (Sega notes, however, that you can still play each game offline.) ]

Finally, a use for that smartphone.

Whoops, that's what I get for modding before reading the comments.

How are you supposed to play console games on a device that doesn't have buttons? I know the games will have on screen buttons, but that's not good enough. You need tactile feedback. You need to be able to rest your thumbs on the buttons when not pressing them so that you know exactly where the buttons are. This will not be a good experience.

You can use a bluetooth controller, about $15, or use ps3 controller.

If I'm going out, I don't want to carry a PS3 controller with me, and if I'm at home, I don't want to play console games on a tiny phone screen.

OK, then, never mind.

Sounds like phone gaming just isn't for you, then. Any touch-based game is going to have that problem.

Some games are designed for a touch interface, like puzzle games where you drag pieces around the screen. Those work fine on a phone. I just think a lot of nostalgic gamers are going to be disappointed with touch screen controls for console games.

This,
Others may not have the same issue, but I tend to find that when I try to play a game with any kind of on screen direction-pad, I'll often drift just far enough that I'll be unable to control the game for long.
I'm too used to the tactile controller.

My laptop has a touchpad, but I bring a wireless mouse with me for times when I want more precision. It'd be nice to have a bluetooth controller on hand for a lunch break.
mechanical contrivance said @ 12:42pm GMT on 23rd Jun
Keeping a bluetooth controller in your desk sounds convenient. I just don't want to carry one around with me all the time.

I never thought to try plugging my ps3 controller into my tablet using an otg adapter. It works.

They usually use digital buttons/joysticks. It's not the same but...

I think people who are actually serious about playing the games probably already play them in emulators on their PCs. This is more about games as lifestyle accessories, "retro gamer" charms for electronic charm bracelets.
HoZay said @ 10:00pm GMT on 22nd Jun
fucking casuals.
Dienes said @ 12:00am GMT on 23rd Jun
Or they just want to play an old favorite in the doctor's waiting room rather than Flappy Bird or whatever the hell kids play nowadays.
sanepride said @ 3:02am GMT on 23rd Jun
I'm thinking in transit, like on a long domestic flight.
mechanical contrivance said @ 12:54pm GMT on 23rd Jun
I would actually bring a book on a long flight, but I'm old fashioned.
sanepride said @ 4:03pm GMT on 23rd Jun
Book? What is this 'book' which you speak of? Is it some ancestor of words on a screen?
Dienes said @ 6:56pm GMT on 23rd Jun
It sounds like a Kindle, he must just be confused.
arrowhen said @ 7:05pm GMT on 23rd Jun
A book is a low capacity analog Kindle.

Well fuck... this means my wife is going to be mad and my child is going to be neglected for atlest a week.
HoZay said @ 4:33am GMT on 23rd Jun
They don't have phones?
backSLIDER said @ 5:48am GMT on 23rd Jun
Oh I don't know, probably. I just reached level 10 in phantasy star 2
HoZay said @ 6:07am GMT on 23rd Jun
Winning!
Headlessfriar said[1] @ 11:52am GMT on 23rd Jun
Bah. The good Phantasy Star games were 1 & 4.

Edit: Ok, maybe only 3 sucked. I think I remember 2 more poorly because I had a buggy copy. If you exited the final dungeon using the laconian sword, the whole thing crashed.
