Going by the photo of the wrench, it looks to be about 1/2" or so. I'm not sure I could fit my finger through it.

In fairness, it was stuck. And stuck for 15 hours. So it wasn't a comfortable fit.

I want to know what happened at the 15-hour mark that prompted the visit to the ER, that wasn't happening at 5 or 10 hours.

It says he was 'bought in' and they tried to get his parent's consent for a procedure. So I suspect he was found by somebody. Somebody who is sitting in the corner of a bar trying to drink the memories away.
