No plastic rice in Nigeria, says NAFDAC

quote [ The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday said laboratory result of the suspected fake rice showed that the product was not plastic but rice contaminated with micro organisms. ]

This is a follow up to the post:

I thought it looked way to perfect. Just not worth the expense to make such a convincing fake. As I previously said, if it was plastic, there'd be easier/cheaper ways to make a buck off it. But passing off contaminated rice as safe? Sure that's a no brainer.

TL;DR: UNPROVEN (but probably not)

In the movie on Snopes, it looks to me like they are recycling plastic into the kinds of pellets that extrusion and injection molding machines use as source material.

Fairly in depth article. I will take issue with its claim that 'fake rice' is just one in a line of xenophobic untruths about Chinese food safety standards though. There are plenty of genuine examples that made it all too believable on first pass.

Recently in my own country, a large children's hospital was delayed due to building materials imported from China being adulterated with asbestos.

Not to mention all the recent hoo-haa about knock offs flooding amazon...

I have no desire to fan the flames of anti-china sentiment. But it's a rapidly industrialising country with overpopulation which is still struggling to get on top of poverty and corruption in some areas. And there's no need for anyone to fake news to justify stringent safety testing of imports.

I'm having a real hard time understanding how anyone could think real rice is plastic. And it's not just one person that made the mistake. They even cooked some up.
midden said[1] @ 7:35pm GMT on 31st Dec
Yeah, one of the things that made them suspicious was that it got sticky when cooked. Um. Have they ever cooked rice before?

I don't even believe their results about it being contaminated, at all. Sounds like they're either corrupt, incompetent, or both.

You're telling me an African government is corrupt and/or incompetent? This is my shocked face.
