So uh... antisocial individuals actually don't really respond very well to punishment as a motivator, particularly those with psychopathic tendencies. Not that "it's not very effective" is the main reason why we should be appalled by this.
Don't get me wrong, members of the judiciary - particularly those in lower/magistrates courts - are subject to terrible verbal abuse on a daily basis that they do not deserve (disclosure - I have close friends who work in the field). I would be happy for expanded security and other practical measures. But the court should respond with professionalism and maturity, clear explanations of consequences of behaviour, consideration of psychological factors at play that may be remediable - not a show of force, no matter how cathartic. |
