The Brewing Shitstorm

quote [ Hallmark, a 4 Billion Dollar company, has stolen one of my poems to market cards to mothers with children. ]

You guys remember our old SE friend, the bird-lion hybrid, cardinal? He's gone on to writing poetry and books and things and it seems Hallmark Baby has recently stolen one of his bits to help market their website. So if you'd like to help stir up trouble or just enjoy a good old shitstorm, hop on the Fuck Hallmark bandwagon. If we really try maybe we can kill the greeting card industry in time to prevent valentine's day ;)

Fun fact: This quote, often attributed to Kurt Vonnegut, is actually cardinal's.

So cardinal is actually this guy Iain Thomas?
According to Wikiquote, this is the first appearance of the misattributed 'Vonnegut' quote. Funny thing is this first appeared some four months after Vonnegut's death.

Youtube changed around their opengraph stuff so if you start having problems posting youtube links let me know. Think I've got it for now though.

While this certainly sucks for the author, the appropriate thing for Hallmark to do is find the lower level person who swiped the work and fire them, then pay the author an industry standard fee for his work. I'm sure it would be a tiny drop in their advertising and PR funding bucket. And they'd come out smelling like a rose.

True, but even in your search results the first page has a a link that attributes it to him. Making sure they have proper attribution and/or licensing is part of Hallmark's responsibility.

steele said[1] @ 11:50pm GMT on 7th Feb
Subscribers can do it, because I can't really stop them from doing it. Haven't decided about changing it either way. Technically the purpose behind mod then reply is a solid one, as it's meant to curb arguments, but given that so few people bother modding up or down it makes things somewhat moot.

edit: you can mod and reply at the same time though...
