Palantir has secretly been using New Orleans to test its predictive policing technology

quote [ Palantir deployed a predictive policing system in New Orleans that even city council members don’t know about. ]

Anything Peter Thiel touches is pretty much guaranteed to be evil, but I'm sure this will only be used for good.

Jesus, what an overdramatization of the tool. This is not “predictive” policing like minority report. The system simply gathers information from multiple, non-public, law enforcement databases and combines all the information together. Users are still required to input the initial data to be inferred against. Once organized, algorithms can ASSIST law enforcement in collating multiple crimes, people, and even organizations. It can be a reminder that when you’re looking into someone, they also ran with ‘this’ guy several times before so make sure he’s not involved.

It’s not usable as proof or a predictor of anything, it’s just an organization tool of already available information neatly laid out.

Now, I know people aren’t always a fan of law enforcement or, god forbid, ‘organized’ law enforcement but the article is creating a boogeyman out of the digitizing of this:

Is that something police actually do or is that more of a TV plot device?

It’s never on full display like it is in tv shows, I think that’s just to make audiences feel included.

However, yes in practice you could possibly end up with hundreds of suspects (especially dealing with large gang organizations across the border) and this system could sort them for you, who you’ve spoken to, who you haven’t, who your primary targets are.

If you wanted to do a large search warrant of several unrelated people on the same day, you could show the AUSA or judge an example of this to organize your official request.

I just had an all-night dream that masqueraded as "Highlander - The Director's Cut", on VHS no less. I remember trying to fast forward and rewind it.

The Director's Cut seemed to involve nothing but a detailed examination of Connor MacLeod and Brenda Wyatt's domestic life, as they jumped down waterfalls, chased stags and tried to manage their relationship, despite all of Connor's annoying Scottish relatives who lived with them.

In the end it was all too much, and Brenda left. But at that point one of the relatives, who was sick and lying in their bed upstairs, was attacked by a Wynkie (a traditional Scottish sprite or ghost that my subconscious just made up). It looked a bit like a small nazgul, and it tried to kill the invalid relative by pelting him with tennis balls.

Brenda and Conner fought the Wynkie together, but mutual monster-slaying is no substitute for a deep relationship, and Brenda elected to go off with the invalid instead.

It was all really quite epic, and I have no idea where it all came from.

This is a tricky one...there are underbudgeted police departments trying to be as effective as they can...with one foot already in abuses of power and profiling.

This is an advanced version of what the New York police Used to do they called it hot spotting Hot Spotting

What else has Peter Theil done that is evil? All I know about him really is that he was on the board of Facebook but recently left and served Trump's campaign in some way.

Survive by drinking the blood of the living, for one thing.
