Time to release the internet from the free market – and make it a basic right

quote [ Internet providers seized a tool built at public expense, privatized it, and sold it back to us for profit. Repealing net neutrality will only make it worse ]

The FCC voted 3-2 to repeal the Net Neutrality Regulations.

So you can still consume products and services from companies that are already big enough to pay-off other people's ISPs to continue to have access to their users.

I mean, part of me would like that too, but I also know any violence will be used as an excuse to further authoritarian causes. Pai is a figurehead, the real enemy is the industry undermining america and the ignorance of the people. Wheeler was anti-net nuetrality too until the dems saw it was political suicide.

Not so fun fact, if you type "where does a" into google it comes up "where does ajit pai live". There's a lot of people that hate him, some of em are bound to be arseholes, if I was his kids I'd be sleeping at Grandma's for the next week.

This is an issue that is cut and dry for me and has been for years. Net neutrality is a good thing; the greatest thing about the Internet up to this point.

I find myself against my normal allies because they've made it into a partisan issue.

So, since ISPs are no longer common carriers, does that mean they are responsible for everything done on their network? Can I sue someone's ISP if that person does harm to me, since their ISP is complicit in any acts originating from their media service? (Obviously I can't sue my own ISP for letting bad things through to me, but only since I'm contractually forced into arbitration. But I've signed no contract with other ISPs, so... a million cuts in small claims courts?)
Headlessfriar said @ 7:51pm GMT on 14th Dec
Sure, if someone looks at kiddie porn on their phone, sue their phone provider. That's what loss of common carrier should mean.

Don't worry *too much* over this.

First, this is going to be immediately challenged in a DC federal court. Pai is going to have to show that this change was no capricious in nature, which he can not. His only claim against this being a capricious change is the public comments, which we can already prove over 2 million of them are fake.

So, ISPs will get to run roughshot for few months/better part of a year. That sucks. However, unless Pai's got some secret legal weapon, this can't possibly stand.

I can understand that, but as someone who's job it is to understand this process (I work for a CLEC,) I am not scared yet. Concerned, yes.

I will get scared when Pai pulls out some surprising legal argument or the case gets tried in some deep red state.

We need to open bandwidth lines. Just like we allow different providers to use the same electric and gas lines, we need to allow different isps to provide bandwidth over the existing lines to encourage competition so the big providers have incentive not to fuck with people more than they already do.
