Poly: Browse, discover and download 3D objects and scenes

quote [ If you’re building for virtual and augmented reality, you need 3D objects for your apps. With Tilt Brush and Blocks, we’ve made 3D creation easier. Now, we want to enable creators and developers to build on everyone’s work. That’s why we created Poly: one place to browse, discover and download 3D objects. ]

Awesome for developers, maybe not so much for places like Turbosquid and other marketplaces.

Neural Nets + VR = Magic!

Also, did I mention I released an android VR Paint app for NoloVR hardware last month? NoloPaint vid demo in extended. :D

For some reason the capture software doesn't record sound.

Clearly, this is a public act of defiance to my position.

I actually would have like to vote twice. One positive for
YAY VR, aand one negative self link (those belong in comments)

Do they though? It wasn't like that was even the focus of the post.

I would say anything that can be seen on the main page without going into the post is a focus of the post.

lol. yup and still stand by that vote. I'm a slight fan of vr. Glad to see anything that advances it.

VR would be great, but point well made.

Anyone doing work on games in VR?

BIRD of PREY fly from the birds point of view, have an idea on control inputs too.

There are a lot of really solid VR games. I'm story-lining a psychological choose your own path story/game.

+1 for VR related work alone...

So, I gave in and bought a Vive a few years earlier than I was expecting to.

The trigger was my girlfriend going into a period of psychosis, which usually means that my (our) life is on hold for the next 3-4 months. And the prospect to escaping into another world where people don't think I'm trying to murder them was too attractive. Or at least zombies don't call the police when they think you're trying to shoot them.

In fact, she's holding up much better than usual, and I've only used the Vive for a couple of days. This just means that when the "Big One" hits, it's going to hurt me worse of course. But at least I have the Vive.

Except I'm not quite sure what to do with it now. I have stood on mars, throwing beach balls at the NASA rover, and watching them bounce off down the crater. I have sat on the edge of the Grand Canyon, moving the sun around in the sky, like a God. The experience is amazing, but after the experience, I'm slightly lost with what to do with it next.

I've been looking for some project to program, but the only think I've thought of so far is a sort of virtual estate/mansion/farm. I've never played one of those farm simulators, but you could lay out fields, gardens, orchards etc, and then visit them in all seasons. Pruning trees and topiary as they grow.

Which is typical of me that I can only think of project requiring far more resources and skill than I am capable of. Speedtree is an entire company, devoted to making realistic tree algorithms, and they don't allow the tree to continue to grow realistically.

I've thought of trying to create a low poly farmville type game. Have a greenhouse or something to that effect with areas that you could plant different procedurally generated flowers and whatnot. Something I considered is, if you're willing to forgo the realism and go a more abstract route, you could see about adapting something like tracery and design your own "seeds" for building different types of plants.

Personally, I try to always be working on projects beyond my skill level so I know what skills I want to pick up on next. Often times the most difficult part is planning the route from point A to point Z. Once you've got steps in between in place, it's just a matter of putting the work in and doing more than thinking. I mean, if you look at some of my posts from a few years ago, I knew jack shit about C# and Unity. Now I'm pretty comfortable with the basic functions of Unity and I'm actually getting a handle on thinking in terms of GameObjects and how they interact.
