Yiff in Hell?

quote [ 19 hospitalized after intentional release of chlorine gas at Chicago ?furry? animal character convention ]

Furries actually have a reasonable claim to persecution now, good god.

Brilliant idea, though technically they would be a 'feathery', not a 'furry'. I'd expect they'd have their own conventions.

I thought the extreme hatred against furries was mostly just a meme without any teeth but holy fucking shit who would actually try and gas people for dressing up like animals? Even though I can vaguely relate to the gut reaction of furry fandom being weird and creepy I couldn't imagine even considering doing something like this.

Rule 34 would be my guess. Someone wanted to film it for the Furry/Chlorine gas fetishists out there.
Isosceles_Lock said @ 2:32am GMT on 8th Dec
Yeah they exist as the whipping boys for internet forums, mainly because they dress up like goofs and draw weird inflation porn and are mostly and internet phenomenon themselves (although I have seen some 90's zine looking comics that I assume were spread at normal comic conventions).

But the hate is like you said,a meme, the only time I've seen it as earnest anger is when furries start usinging a service that other people have been using (deviant art / 4chan)

This event is just strange, I'm thinking whoever did this would've done the same thing to a coin collector convention.

"Yeah they exist as the whipping boys for internet forums"

Easy pickings for "horrors of the internet" posts for being a fringe perversion group. Apparently it's not even a hypersexualized subculture though - it's just a bunch of people dressing up in animal costumes and no more overly sexualized than your average comicon or Midwest PTA meetings. Just as much illicit and bizarre sex acts happens there or anywhere, and really it's ridiculous pretending to be concerned about it.

Admittedly I did think lesser of that culture in the past. Not anymore. Now to me, they're just people doing their own thing, so why bother them?
arrowhen said @ 4:38am GMT on 8th Dec
Furry fandom predates the internet by a few years and was an established part of "geek culture" by the time the internet went mainstream. Hell, i think 20/20 did a story on them in the late 80s.

Furry bashing has probably been around just as long, because if there's one thing geeks love, it's making fun of anyone slightly more or less geeky than themselves.

The mystery deepens.

Also not gas as news sources reported. Instead it was powder spilled. An important distinction because it means everyone dying (gas) vs a few people close to the powder spill having respiratory issues. But that's the quality of news reporting these days.

I dunno, PETA seems like it would hate furries. For one, I'm sure at every large convention like this there is at least one guy who makes his costume out of real animal skin for "authenticity". Then there's the whole being sexually attracted to animals thing, they probably see the furry thing as "normalizing the sexual abuse of animals" the same way other culture warriors see video games and BDSM porn as "normalizing the sexual abuse of women".

I used to read Albedo and the Dreamery way back when (well and Cerebus and Neil the Horse) and I just enjoyed the comics for comics.
Then I found out about furrys.
Not my cup of tea and I don't consider myself "furry" no matter how many times I try and get my girl to wear cat ears.
That's different.
These fursuit wearing yiffers.. oog
(as in oog creepy)
For me reading stuff like Albedo was "just more science fiction - but the characters are animals" Furries look at it as this weird sexualized thing.

I don't really consider someone a furry unless they dress up. Maybe if they drew the stuff and write fanfiction and have a "fursona" but don't dress up I'd consider the line crossed but reading a comic about politics or something that just happens to have talking squirrels as the main characters is not being a furry. Hell, there are plenty of people that have had very unsavoury thoughts about Rouge the Bat or Krystal the Fox that I wouldn't consider a furry based solely on that alone.

Gassing people though. That is pure and genuine fucked up.
Dienes said @ 12:23am GMT on 9th Dec
The chlorine gas and whatnot is heinous and evil, yeah.

The sexual thing: Furries make me feel a little bit like strangers who do BDSM public humiliation scenes (e.g., dressing them up as a pony and whipping them down a public street) do: like their need for an audience makes me a participant in their sex without consent on my part. (FUCK NO I AM NOT EQUATING THIS TO RAPE.)

Am I a total asshole for feeling this way?
lilmookieesquire said @ 1:02am GMT on 9th Dec
It's kind of like a "in the privacy of your own home" thing. I get that. Mixed feelings in a "slippery slope" fashion though
Dienes said @ 5:03pm GMT on 9th Dec
In regards to slippery slope, a fetish is very, very different from one's orientation. I wouldn't say a gay person should do it in the privacy of their own home no more than I'd tell an African American to be black in the privacy of their own home.

No one would argue if I said one should pick their nose in private. But since this is partially sexual, yeah I see the slippery slope concern.
gendo666 said @ 11:59pm GMT on 9th Dec
I wouldn't compare being gay to being furry.
I'm perfectly happy not knowing or caring about someones sexual preference.
And seriously how do you tell?
I don't really want to see someone gay or straight making out in public.
Then you have furries.
I REALLY don't want to see some fursuit wandering around the produce selection
OR yiffing at a bus stop.

That's the difference.
also the whole "born this way" augment with furries holds no water.
arrowhen said @ 12:22am GMT on 10th Dec
