The Hero with a Thousand Faces -
Why do we keep telling the same stories over and over?
quote [ The recipe is universal. Find a wound common to many, someone to blame for it and a good story to tell. Mix it all together. Tell the wounded you know how they feel. That you found the bad guys. Label them: the minorities, the politicians, the businessmen. Cartoon them. As vermin, evil masterminds, flavourless hipsters, you name it. Then paint yourself as the saviour. Capture their imagination. Forget about policies and plans, just enrapture them with a good story. One that starts in anger and ends in vengeance. A vengeance they can participate in. ]

So the solution is to...let white rural voters that we're just like them? Here's my problem with this argument: it works fine maybe for white urbanites. But for people of color, people with different sexual orientations...this is virtually impossible. Racism is so baked into the rural/urban divide that this will never happen. So what would happen if white urbanites made an effort to identify with white rural America? Non-white minorities would be left behind. I'll take a hard pass, thanks.
