Yes and no. Remember that religion has been around a lot longer than modern medicine. So if you have a gut feeling / anecdotal evidence that people are getting sick because they're having lots of sex with each other, you tie it to an emotional reason (God) rather than a logical reason (STDs). There's also things like getting exactly what you want whenever you want it turns you I to a horrific person with little empathy. See also: food hygei e and halal.
