This one actually does have some historical basis. Originally it was "Three on a match". |

Dates back to WWI, if not earlier–lighting more than three cigarettes with a match would give enemy snipers enough time and visibility to line up a shot. British writer Saki's last words were allegedly "Put that bloody cigarette out!" And now you know.
