Father and son accused of rape want 'only law book that truly matters' at their trial: The Bible

quote [ A father and son accused of raping a teenage girl over a three-year period and keeping her shackled in a basement have made it clear that they don’t have faith in the law or in the people who practice it. When they face an Ohio jury as they defend themselves against criminal charges that carry long prison sentences, they will rely on one book: The Bible.  ]

No doubt there's some passage in the Good Book that justifies their crimes.

So, numbers- shouldn't we be calling this by its proper name: Christian child rape?
At least it's the right category.

I'm pretty sure the Bible says the punishment for rape is to pay a fine to the victim's father to cover property damages. Either that or he is supposed to marry (i.e., own) her.

If I remember my bar mitzvah torah portion, the proper response is to trick the guy's whole town into getting circumcised, then kill them while they're woozy from it.
sanepride said @ 2:42am GMT on 25th Jan
Oy, as if getting circumcised isn't bad enough!

Genesis 34 When [Jacob's sons] learned that their sister [Dinah] had been raped, they became furiously angry. Nothing is more disgraceful than rape, and it should not be tolerated in Israel.

So Simeon and Levi, two of Dinah’s brothers, attacked with their swords and killed every man in [the rapist's] town. Then they took Dinah and left. Jacob’s other sons came and took everything they wanted. All this was done because of the horrible thing that had happened to their sister.

Alternatively, the actual law in Deuteronomy 22:23-29 says that if no one hears it, the woman must die.

If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.

But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die. But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.

If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days

Who'd have thought we'd have so many biblical scholars here?
I'm impressed, and maybe a little leery.

One of the easiest paths to atheism is to read the Bible and try to make sense of it.
sanepride said @ 9:57pm GMT on 25th Jan
Actually that doesn't sound easy at all. I'd say a much easier path is to just dismiss the bible as fanciful fiction without so much as skimming it.

KingPellinore is correct. I used to be a bible-thumping evangelist, until I started reading that book I was using to justify all of my assholery. To be more specific, I had always read the Bible, but generally in sermons and studies and classes where you only look at specific passages. Once I started seeing the contradictions in that book, I started seeing the contradictions in the church, and then starting seeing the contradictions in my fellow evangelists' lives.

That's not easy to do if you believe everything in the bible is true.
sanepride said @ 10:04pm GMT on 25th Jan
Luckily I never had that problem. Easy-peasy!

Leviticus 18:6 No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the Lord.

Leviticus 18:10 10 Do not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter; that would dishonor you.

Leviticus 18:17 Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter....

They'll be representing themselves at trial. That's good. It means they'll certainly be found guilty.
