Didn't they do child pornography, which for a time was legal in their country? I think I read that somewhere, but there's no way I'm googling that question.

Sounds like a highly dubious claim. Maybe they had a lower age of consent, which might make some of their models illegal in other countries, but that 's not the same thing as child pornography.
