Post-Democracy in America - Open Source with Christopher Lydon

quote [ "Donald Trump is a post-democratic leader. The liberal democratic model—of which Obama was the last president—is completely dead." ]

I've seen a lot of hand-wringing about what it all means, what it's all about, and what we should learn from the Trump election (if anything at all). This interview with Italian legal scholar Ugo Mattei is perhaps the most insightful and thought-provoking (if depressing) of the many, many essays I've read discussing the election and its aftermath.

"Unger identifies himself as a “man of the left” but he also views Trump as the “lesser evil” in this election. He believes that the hypocrisies exposed by Trump’s election will reveal the fundamental weakness of political parties in the U.S. Now, he says, progressives will be forced to return to higher goals: they can no longer be satisfied by minor amendments and material redistribution. Instead, if Trump promises to “Make America Great Again”, the resistance must make an even grander promise: “Make Humans Great Again”. The political project in the U.S. must work towards what he calls “the divinization of humanity.”

This is the dumb shit that I have been hearing from the Greens...it naive at best. This election will push back the progressive cause to the Hover era. That is pre FDR and will all but end the New Deal.

Trump set to reshape judiciary after GOP blockade

The Senate left town with 99 judicial vacancies, as well as the current Supreme Court opening.

This is what Trump America looked like this is what again looks like.

Coal workers in the United States when we had a small federal government, no EPA, no unions, and no regulation.

Anybody "Of the Left" who think Trump was the lesser evil...is a fucking fool.

I've just about had it with democracy anyway, since 2016.

2016 has killed just about everything else. Why should democracy get a free pass?

Actually, we're going to have a Trumpenführer because of the culture war. Because absolutely nothing was going on in Congress, it's easy to forget that progressives have been gaining ground like the heyday of Genghis Khan everywhere else. And while I consider myself to be progressive, it was kind of alarming to see where it was going. We achieved gender and racial equality some time ago, but couldn't realize it and kept pretending it was 1950. The Supreme Court acknowledged that gay marriage was going to be a thing, so New York City decided to go full retard and acknowledge 31 genders. A little bit of overreach could be accounted for, but having to pretend that #blacklivesmatter is anything but a transparent cash grab for a few scammers is the equivalent of opening up another front against Russia in September. So, reality TV picks our next President.

I've been pretty much a Cassandra on those topics here. And in the spirit of giving prophecy that nobody believes, I'm going to predict that progressives are going to have to get rid of that 47th chromosome if they want to win elections. The demographics are there. The only thing lacking is the will.

"pretend that #blacklivesmatter is anything but a transparent cash grab for a few scammers"

Yeah, people have been saying this kind of thing for a while. They point at a few famous self-promoting figures and conclude that entire social movements are thereby money-grubbing scam artists. No. That shit isn't true.

What we achieved in 1964 was full de jure racial equality. The ERA never passed in the United States and while there's been piecemeal statutory progress the notion that things are now "equal" is ridiculous. No evidence bears this out.
