Another attempt at RPGin'!

So... we've had a few failed attempts, but I'd be willing to GM a game of either Rifts or the new Star Wars RPG, as those are the books I have. (Well, I still also have the TMNT RPG, which uses the same system as Rifts, so that's in play too, if anyone is desperate for some mutant animal RPGing)

At this point, I just want to guage interest. I'd run it through Mythweavers, as we did before, and could promise at the very minimum, weekly updates on Wednesdays, but likely I'd be able to do at least small things any day of the week. I also promise that I don't have any major life changes or work changes upcoming, so there'll be no excuse if I flake out and no reason for me to.

I'd say I'd want at least three players, but we could do two in a pinch. More than three is gravy.
I could also consider other systems, if there was strong interest in playing it, but I don't have a lot of experience with others. I know some GURPS, old school AD&D and a bit of Shadowrun. However, if I'm going to be GM, I'd prefer a system that I know.

Sign up here and and I'll start working on a campaign if there's enough responses. I'd aim to begin no later than the start of September, but we could begin anywhere in August as well.

FYI, for those that don't know, the Star Wars RPG requires some collaborative character creation. Rifts, as far as I'm concerned, players could get as wild as they wanted and it wouldn't matter, cos I'd throw you all in the meat grinder anyway. The story in Rifts isn't as important (imo) as Star Wars, cos Rifts is more about crazy action and fun, and SW is a little more narrative focussed.

Anyway... thoughts, questions, suggestions, lay 'em on me.

I am interested in participating, but am coming from next to no experience on paper role playing. Played board games and LAN's but never a paper game if you could stand a noob then consider me in :D

Funny that I've spent the better part of my evening reading the Rifts sourcebook, then come here to see this post.

I would also be interested. I haven't played since I was in high school (which is twenty five solar years ago, but add an extra fifteen for rural New Zealand in the 1990s being the land that time forgot).

Play by post suits me since I live in the future and I can leave my notes for you to discover when you catch up.

I find I'm to impatient for play by post games, but if you ever put together a Skype game or need help from a outside party number crunching/map designing this game let me know.

Don't have any experience Skype gaming, but honestly, when I have the time to sit down and play that way, I'd rather be sitting down with my gaming group. I also think that the odds of getting a group together that can make different time zones and a real schedule work sounds next to impossible. At least with play by form gaming, you can expect that people can find a few minutes here and there to participate.

I do get the impatience part, but I don't think Skype is the answer for me.

one of the best online RPGs i ever saw was a group of mages, masters of their fields, and because they were so powerful, their spells went spectacularly wrong often.

i imagine it was as much fun for the GM to write as it was for the players to experience.

Should I know this image? Or did you just pick it because it relates to your anecdote?

I love play by posts, but I'll probably don't wanna get into any new rule system.

Rifts is pretty straightforward. I doubt you'll see anything that doesn't feel familiar. It uses D20s and D10s for pretty much everything, I think. It's actually been a long time since I've played it, but it was a nicely put together system.

I love roleplaying. I enjoy some system:y stuff as input to the roleplaying, but mainly I'm after character interaction/exploration.
b said @ 9:21pm GMT on 28th Jul
Well, it can't hurt to try, right? And as I said in my post, i'm open to other options, though not sure about GMing them. However, different rulesets are just that, rule sets, and I've got enough gaming in my past to figure pretty much any of them out.
Jack Blue said @ 9:29pm GMT on 28th Jul
Yeah. I am not alien to rules myself, as long as they are not a giant hurdle if you lack the books..
LacheChance said[1] @ 12:43am GMT on 29th Jul
No, Rifts is the most complicated rules heavy system I know of. Dungeon World is straightforward, you basically just write your name on a character sheet and start. I believe the base book is a free pdf from their site.

In either case for running the game I would suggest Roll20. Free accounts limited but not by much.

Damn. I'd really like to give an SE rpg another shot, but I'm not really interested in either option. Rifts is just too fucking gonzo for my tastes, and while I like Star Wars quite a bit, I find that it's a great setting for movies or video games but a surprisingly lousy one for tabletop RPGs. Maybe I just had bad luck with the groups I played with.
b said @ 9:23pm GMT on 28th Jul
Like I said, I am open to alternatives. If you've got a suggestion and I can get ahold of the books relatively easily (paper or digital) I'd be willing to give it a go. I'm not tied to the idea of only Rifts or Star Wars.

That being said, RPGs are what you make of them, not the rules or the settings. I'm confident I could come up with something fun and engaging for either system, or any other, really.

Actually, you know what? If you're really enthusiastic about running something, then I'm in, no matter what it is. System and setting matter, but the biggest hurdle to overcome in PbP gaming is simply motivation... and the GM needs to be motivated even more than everyone else, because they have a lot more work to do.

So pick whatever system you're most excited to run, whatever story you're most excited tell, and I'm sure I can manage to find the fun in it. Let's do this thing!

I've got a Fantasy Grounds license for D&D 5e, as well as the starter adventure Lost Mines of Phandelver. I'm also up for play-by-post as long as the system isn't difficult to figure out/I don't have to buy anything. I've already spent too much on D&D!
b said @ 10:15pm GMT on 28th Jul
No experience with Fantasy Grounds at all, so I'm not sure if you're saying we could use your license somehow... or if you'd want to DM yourself?

Play by post via Myth Weavers is super easy, and I'm sure PDFs of most rule sets are available online, completely legally, of course.
mechavolt said @ 10:40pm GMT on 28th Jul
It's a real-time graphical interface. With the license I have, I would have to run the game, but anyone else could join in as a player.

And my pirating days are long behind me. For reals. Like, no lie. Seriously.

I absolutely LOVED RIFTS when i played it way back in middle school. Don't ask how many years ago that was.....

I would be totally down to play, but I don't think I can. Will be out in Death Valley doing field work, and I don't get much internet out in the Desert.... If you don't mind me playing semi-absently, let me know! EDIT: Semi-absently, as in gone for 2-3 weeks, back for a week, gone for 2-3 weeks, etc.

Hey guys, not to be a pest, but if you let me know if you're joining, either via SE or the email address I gave out, I can really begin getting this up and running. I've already got the bones of a campaign laid out in my mind, but I'd like to get everyone who wants to play registered at Myth Weavers so that we can go over character creation and all that comes with starting up a campaign. Also, I'm not going to put a bunch of time in getting a campaign ready and then find out that no one actually wants to play.

I hope y'all do, cos I'm stoked to run an adventure for you!
