A dumb question, just for my technical interest: Did you implement some levels of caching, e.g. saving the precompiled main page to a file?

I've got a basic cache going for the main page entry list query and the entries themselves,but apparently i missed something and if the caching fails it's not reloading properly.

Yeah, caching tends to be tricky.

Since I bearly have got any clue of the sensible inner workings of your page, just two more things and I´m out:
-is it just the massive amount of queries or are some slower ones blocking? Mostly I get some clues via show full processlist or logging all queries.
-the whole mysql_*-stuff is deprecated, I´d prefer PDO, which sometimes can be faster :)

Because we're still trying to grow we're on a shared webhost and i'm pretty sure one of the other sites on this server is causing some of our queries to fail.
i'll keep that in mind as i start planning v2, thanks.

I'm thinking it's a little of column A, lot of column B. We're still seeing slow and steady user numbers, but the increase in content due to streaking has lead to lurkers visiting more often.

Out of interest are people helping with a rewrite or '2.0'

2.0 hasn't technically started yet, but it probably won't be open. No offense to previous attempts but i would like to see it actually come to fruition. ;)

Understandable. Dont know anything about the previous attempts, but glad that it wont be lack from lack of resources or tech know how this time around though.
