I think we need to know much more about how this study was controlled to decide the extent of the effect of racism. Unfortunately, the text of the study isn't freely available.
Could it be that black mothers with troubled pregnancies prefer (or are preferentially assigned) white doctors? Was the influence of the hospital-to-hospital difference controlled for? Was the difference in socioeconomic factors (insurance, income, for-profit vs. charity) controlled for? How are doctors assigned to births? Are the factors there controlled? The famous "women earn $0.70 for every $1 that men earn" claim withers substantially once various controls are added. I wonder if this is the same. |

These are the kinds of questions that need to be asked about basically every study. Just as a baseline, because scientific journalism is pretty bad.

I'd say this makes Black newborns twice as likely to die when treated by white doctors. Not that that's not an insane statistic. |

The 3 times likely to die is relative to white baby mortality rates, while the other is overall. I think.
