The Story of the Cabbage Patch Kids Craze of 1983

quote [ In the history of all Christmases that have come to pass, there never was another that so turned the American consumer into a stark raving lunatic like the Cabbage Patch Kids craze of 1983. ]

Gotta patch a lil' kid tryna' get at this cabbage

A friend's sister had one. It was scented like perfume.

I had one of these in the late 80s or early 90s. Generic girl gift. It. Was. Hideous. Just like the troll dolls, I could not fathom why anyone wanted this. I just wanted Ninja Turtle and dinosaur action figures lol

All I wanted was Nintendo games.

Loved those too but they were expensive so we didn't have many. But we did have personal PCs when most families didn't even have one.

I do not miss the old school frustration of getting stuck on a game or renting a game and the manual was missing so it was impossible to play. In game tutorials and internet walkthroughs were a huge improvement.

A lot of people feel the same way, which is why there are a lot of games today that are clearly inspired by the classic NES games but with modern improvements such as in-game tutorials. Another welcome improvement to old style games is infinite lives and multiple check points per level. Btw, the new Shovel Knight DLC just came out.
Another reason for in-game tutorials is that most games today don't come with a manual. Paper costs money, while using a little more space on a disc is free. Back then, space on a ROM chip was very limited, so a paper manual was cheaper.
