Skim reading is the new normal. The effect on society is profound

quote [ When the reading brain skims texts, we don’t have time to grasp complexity, to understand another’s feelings or to perceive beauty. We need a new literacy for the digital age ]

Good writing begets good reading.

Too often online writing is the text equivalent of a YouTube video, too much wacky filler and 100 seconds/words before getting anywhere near the point. And too many "long reads" describe the "dappled sunlight" when the subject is about police shootings (or whatever).

The internet needs more editors.

"The internet needs more editors."

Dead right. A good editor is a miracle worker. If you want proof of that check out Gordon Lish some time.

But miracles cost money. To that end I have started subscribing to more stuff in the past few years. Actually paying money and everything. As the saying goes; "If you want to see more of something in the world, get your wallet out."

My vote for consistently good long form goes to The Atavist.

Ha, I looked up The Atavist and it was bought by Wordpress in June. You can kiss quality goodbye...

I worry that you are right, but I hope that you are wrong.

Could you let the internet know I'm available for hire as an editor?

How about 'Skim Treaty Negotiations?'

TRUMP: It's a big day for trade, big day for our country. A lot of people thought we'd never get here, because we all negotiate tough. We do; so does Mexico.

And this is a tremendous thing. This has to do -- they used to call it NAFTA. We're going to call it the United States-Mexico Trade Agreement, and we'll get rid of the name NAFTA. Has a bad connotation, because the United States was hurt very badly by NAFTA for many years. And now it's a really good deal for both countries, and we look very much forward to it.

So basically, the only thing coming from the oval office so far is "we are changing the name" and "Canada better get on board or else." Same BS - no details, just trash talking and back-patting over semantics. Sounds like all hat no cattle as usual.

Lack of real details is telling me it’s not going to be that good for either side. Pena Nieto wanted to get it done before Lopez Obrador takes over, and the New Mexican Congress. This is teetering right on the edge (a vote or 2 can easily swing it either way), for ratification by the current Mexican Congress.

Obrador takes over Dec 1.

It also goes without saying that Pena Nieto is a complete tool.

We need a -1 TLDR mod.

But that would imply that reading the article is the norm. :P

[Cough!] Now that I atually read the article, this seems a bit alarmistic to me. Yep, they may be right about the tactile thing and everything, but it's not really media armageddon.
