World Cup 2018 groups: Guide to the group stage games and latest analysis

quote [ The wait for the 2018 FIFA World Cup is very nearly at an end, the talking has pretty much stopped and we're only a few days away from the first match of this summer's highly-anticipated tournament. ]

Any SEers excited for the World Cup this summer? During the last two held I was out hitchhiking and didn't get to see any games save for the 2010 final and semifinals. This time around I want to catch as many as I can. My next podcast will be recorded during the first game, Russia vs. Saudi Arabia, in the early morning hours of June 14th.

Since team USA didn't qualify, and I'm taking a trip there next month, I'm rooting for underdog country Japan. If they beat Poland and Senegal, and don't get totally whipped by Columbia, they could place second in their grouping.

As optimistic as I'd like to be for Australia getting to the final 16, we got a shit draw this time around, so probably not going to happen.

My money's on either Spain or Argentina, but when it comes down to it, i generally root for the side playing that has the least number of diving douchebags on it.

You can always cheer for first-timers Iceland and Panama until they reveal their respective levels of doucheness.

I can't get into it anymore, the poor sportsmanship just pisses me off. I'll head over to the Rugby World Cup in Japan next year however.

I've watched every World Cup since 1998, but I don't know if I'm going to bother this time around, due to (a) FIFA's corruption and (b) Russia as the host. There have been investigations into Russian doping of athletes and FIFA accepting bribes from host candidates, and in both cases evidence of foul play was found and in both cases FIFA tried to whitewash it. I love high-level soccer (my money is on Germany or Spain, though it would be nice to see Messi finally drag his country's team to a championship), but I don't want to reward bad behavior.

I haven't been watching much soccer since I stopped playing in 2001. Heard the stories but even as a kid I remember thinking the NFL matches must be manipulated in some way. Too much money in play not to get greedy ideas.

Yeah, it's a shame. Part of the appeal of soccer is that it's so accessible (which is why it is the most popular sport in the world). But the next WC is scheduled to be in Qatar, which has been using slave labor to build stadiums, after (most likely) bribing FIFA to get hosting rights. I might not watch again until 2026, but it'll be in North Korea then.

2026 location was announced today.

So I was basically right, the 2026 host is North Korea's bitch.

We want to thrill to the beautiful game, but Fifa’s World Cup is toxic

If you wonder how you would have reacted to Hitler’s 1936 Olympics, look at how you are reacting to Putin’s 2018 World Cup and learn something about yourself and the nature of sport.

I'm rooting for Uruguay, of course!

England is usually my team of choice, but this time around they have so many annoying players that it's really hard for me to root for them. Guess I'll have to go with a match-by-match underdog-basis.

As for Russia being the host, here's hoping for some interesting headlines.
