Within the context of the next entry, I thought this was where cabbies got their herb.

Silly me.

Rick Steves did a whole segment on the London cabbies. You start seeing these "cabbie-booths" all over the place around England once you know they are there. There is also a window that you can walk up to and get coffee, but have to produce a hack license to actually walk in the door and get food.

Apparently, getting a London cab license is one of the most difficult tests there are. It takes years to qualify to take it, and you need to be able to find any route, from anywhere in London, from memory. Oh, and you can not use a map or a GPS.

Haven't been out that way since last year, but Uber and Lyft were moving in out that way as well (those drivers are not allowed in the booths).
