Google loses Android battle and could owe Oracle billions of dollars

quote [ Google just lost a major copyright case that could cost it billions of dollars and change how tech companies approach software development.

An appeals court said on Tuesday that Google violated copyright laws when it used Oracle's open-source Java software to build the Android platform in 2009.
Tuesday's ruling is the latest development in a topsy-turvy eight-year battle between Google and Oracle. ]

Google getting beat up everywhere. All the while, phone companies have opted to give Microsoft royalty fees for using Android, which uses their FAT32 format.

So, if I understand this judge... you can not use a programming language in the creation of another programming language?

To create apps for phones, you were pretty much stuck with Java at the time until Apple broke into the smartphone industry.

Android engine under the hood is Dalvik, a Java VM that runs Android apps.

When Google was looking for a run time for their mobile OS, the options available were Java SE, Java ME and .Net CLR. The reasons for narrowing down to these three was that they wanted to leverage/tap into a large developer community to build apps for the platform. The reasons for rejecting all three and coming up with Dalvik was:
- Java SE is not suitable for mobile devices
- Java ME runs all the apps in common memory space
- .Net CLR meant going to MSFT

So Dalvik was cooked up - No MSFT, advantage of Java. It was built with Android in mind and was built “from scratch” using a subset of the standard libraries.

Google wanted to partner with Sun to leverage their ownership of Java. Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems in 2009.

Ah, thank you. I have never been very solid with this side of tech.

Not Java the programming language, Java the platform. Google pilfered some bits and pieces of the J2SE - library components developed by Sun - to build the Android operating system. Those bits and pieces are now a part of the Android OS.
