“Oh My God, This Is So F---ed Up”: Inside Silicon Valley’s Dark Side

quote [ Not far from Sand Hill Road exists a private world of wild sex parties and “cuddle puddles.” As one male investor put it, “You could say it’s disgusting but not illegal—it just perpetuates a culture that keeps women down.” ]

On the brighter side, thanks to their obsession with unconventionalness and "disruption" they might all die from cholera drinking raw water.

Brilliant.

I can't wait for the next Steve Jobs to drink the sacred water of the Ganges and die some weeks later from super-MRSA. His adherents will claim that the hospital's filtered water did him in.

I never really thought about this.

Is springwater not potable unless filtered then?
mechanical contrivance said @ 7:28pm GMT on 3rd Jan
Maybe. Water that comes out of the ground might be contaminated; it might not be.

So do you think that named bottled-at-source springwater is routinely filtered then?

I remember walking past St Ann's Well in the spa town of Buxton, where a family was filling up a dozen eight-litre bottles from the public spring. Water from the sprng is also bottled and sold commercially

I guess that could be the difference between spring water and filtered tap water. If you have to filter it, the spring probably isn't up to much in the first place.

If people have been drinking from a spring for many years without anyone getting sick, then that water must be safe to drink. That doesn't mean all springs are safe to drink from.

These parties aren’t the cause of culture that “keeps women down” but are certainly a symptom of it.

At the same time, I kind of want to dismiss this because I feel it largely has a “Republicans want 50 people to control America and democrats was at least 50% of those to be women.” Vibe.

To me, sexism, isn’t the issue as much as the general economic and social upheaval tech has caused.

There is a reason they call these places Man Fransisco and Man Jose. I think these parties illustrate the symptoms of a disfunctional socio-political environment that tech workplaces have caused.

TL;DR: I see this mainly as an economic divid issue that includes a healthy dose of sexism. That doesn’t mean that sexism doesn’t matter. It does. (And it’s actually hurting the social fabric of America, and shouldn’t be ignored)

At traditional "ha!" swingers parties, women are very much in charge of proceedings. Men, and in particular single men are at the bottom of the heap. This does sound very different, and yes, an expression of male power and fantasy.

"Rich people throw wild parties that are invite only."

OMG! THE OPPRESSION!

Kinda. It sure adds to there being a lot of guys, and only few gals, in the upper crust of Silicon Valley.

Really it's about hypocrisy, gender, and power. Well worth the read.

Psh. These are nothing like eyes wide shut affairs. The houses arent as extravagant as the movie. Dj'd at a handfull of these maybe 7 years ago.

I can safely say, i've seen freakier/weirder shit at the old Power Exchange.

I once attended a masquarade party like that in a London mansion. There were six beds pushed together in the ballroom, and a crowd of people going at it. All the voyeurs in evening dress and elaborate masks gave everything a weirdly Kubrickian atmosphere.

I'm not very keen on Kubrick for the admittedly unreasonable reason that my girlfriend used to know him, and he was trying to set her up with his personal assistant.
