It makes too much sense when you do the math on what Uber/Lyft/etc. drivers make vs. their hours worked, vehicle ownership costs, fuel and maintenance costs. Using a series of stolen vehicles may be the only way to make a living driving an app-cab.

I have only recently used Uber for the first few times and I pretty much think the same. I was in Melbourne and went from South to North Melbourne after dinner on a pretty busy Saturday night. About 17 km's and it took around 37 minutes. My cost? $32. So old mate had me in the car for 40 minutes, supplied fuel, supplied the vehicle, supplied the 27% cut to Uber. He got around $23 for the job. So he is working for $30 an hour (as long as he always has someone in the car), supplying the car, paying fuel, paying insurance, paying running costs...fuck that. Yeah they can claim some expenses off their tax, and that helps, but getting $30 before costs while supplying a car is not something I would do in a fucking fit.
These guys are essentially eating their vehicles. Welcome to the gig economy! |
