a few years back on the AVC we weathered a brietbart invasion. being that AV Club and brietbart both used the disqus commenting system at the time, it was easy for them to just come on over without registering new accounts. so one day they took issue with the AV Club over some article about a steakhouse, and launched a full-frontal invasion. well we beat them back, and launched a counter-offensive. most of this was going pretty much the way these things always go: hot tempers, insults, recrimination, etc. but I chose a different tactic. first I picked the biggest, loudest, most popular guy there I could find (I think he was a staffer, and I would love to think he was Bannon himself). he was my prey, and I was going to keep a lock on him. but I wasn't going to give him anything he wanted from me. I showed him not the slightest bit of raised temper. he insulted me in his every reply, but I steadfastly refused to insult him back. part of this was simply because I knew they would gladly take any flimsy grounds to delete my comments, so I was determined to give them no grounds at all. no swears, nothing for them to grab onto. so while I made my case forcefully, I was polite. and you know what? that's what pissed him off most of all! by the end he was a quivering mass of incoherent jelly. only then did I feel secure enough in taking a single well-earned jab at him. motherfucker was down. for. the. count.

of course, nobodies mind was changed that day. this is the internet, that's not something that's up for grabs. but we all got more upvotes BY FAR than any of the brietbarters. on their own turf! I was still getting upvote notifications for that thread as recently as a year ago. that's how you deal with his kind. it makes it no fun for them. but plenty of fun for you.
