Really illustrates how much waste goes into agriculture

Yes, but the Dutch sure as hell don't want to pay much of anything to the countries that have provided the plant genes that drive their agricultural system. Great new tomato trait from Peru? Those crafty Dutch seed companies (many owned by Monsanto, Bayer, etc.) are all too eager to place that gene under patent and use it in their capital intensive ag system producing 'perfect' vegetables for perfectly well-off consumers. As for the guys that developed and maintain tomato (in our example) genetic diversity in the field, the Dutch don't really care one bit.

What gene did Monsanto patent? Not a cultivar or varietal plant, but GENE.
