I learned editors have a lot of power over writers and can insert whatever into their articles without telling the writer or giving any context that the writer never wrote it.

That's awfully lame. If I was going to turn a piece of my own body into jewelry, I wouldn't just cover it with Elmer's glue and glitter like an elementary school art project. A few options:

- cast in yellow resin, simulating amber
- electroplate with a precious metal
- encase in an ornate reliquary pendant
- wear in a crystal flask
- tan the skin and weave it into a bracelet or belt
- mount onto a small slice of exotic hardwood and wear as a broach

The possibilities are endless.
