I'm also very confused. Bilateral military exercises are quite common, and there was nothing unusual going on with this one.

If the thing is so difficult to fly, why can't they just let the computer handle even more of the fine tuning in flight?

The Osprey is not difficult to fly. The problem is if one of the propellers dips below its vortex ring ("bubble" of air) it loses lift and when one propeller has lift and the other does not....the plane flips with catastrophic results. When this happens, no matter what the altitude, there is no recovery.
