If you're interested in contemporary, but somewhat overlooked authors, I'd recommend The Freeze-Frame Revolution, and Blindsight by Peter Watts. Both have more than their share of Sci-Fi ideas, and are well-paced, exciting reads. For the first, think I Have no Mouth... written by Italo Calvino and a cell biologist. I also enjoyed his Rifters Trilogy, but it has a bit more attitude than I think it deserves (c.f. William Gibson).
