Ellison was a brilliant and wonderfully crusty bastard. I think I first encountered him when I checked out one of his collections from the library, Death Bird Stories, when I as nine or ten.
Blew My Fucking Mind. I think at that point I was reading Xanth stories.
I didn't know people wrote like that, that writing like that existed; facing humanities' fears and doubts and horrors and dreams with brutally honest, direct, and unflinching stories, skillfully and beautifully told.
