The Same Democrats Who Denounce Donald Trump as a Lawless, Treasonous Authoritarian Just Voted to Give Him Vast Warrantless Spying Powers

quote [ How can the rhetoric about Trump from Democratic leaders be reconciled with their actions yesterday to protect his unchecked power to spy on Americans? ]

They're all cut from the safe cloth.

I went to a liberal arts college, where I hung out with liberal people, and I heard variations of “Africa is a #shithole.” On numerous occasions.

One of my peeps, during a poker game one night, said we “should just bomb Africa and start over.” This was an educated, liberal guy.

This ain’t just the pathetic, dotty old racist current president. This is the United States of America.

From JFK’s CIA-led murder of Patrice Lumumba — democratically elected in the Congo — to “King” Leopold II’s torture and rape of Burundi and Rwanda, white #shithole “civilization” has fucked over that continent.

We watched the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, and wondered why “Africans would do that to each other.” Read up on Belgium’s role. That shit didn’t come out of nowhere.

And I haven’t even touched the transAtlantic slave trade, which massacred western Africa and made the West unbelievably rich.

Even in places where people weren’t enslaved en masse — like Angola, Zimbabwe, Botswana — they were effectively enslaved by white traders and others bringing “civilization” to the “Dark Continent.”

We look at the shitty, violent policies of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe, but totally gloss over the white supremacist stronghold that was Rhodesia before.

Then there’s South Africa, of course (and, by extension, Namibia, which was a client state under apartheid). Up until the late 80s, the U.S. was actively supporting the white regime there.

We assuage our guilt when it comes to sub-Saharan Africa by giving money to Sally Struthers-types, condescendingly mourning those “poor Africans,” without acknowledging our country’s role in it all.

Cartography even plays into this, pretending Africa is not a major continent, shrinking it to a size on par with Australia.

In every single way — economically, philosophically, geographically, etc... — #shithole countries like the U.S. have demolished the African continent, and then have turned around and said, “What the fuck is wrong with y’all?”

Africa has been plundered and pillaged several times over. Always in the name of civilization. Always with white supremacy as its driving principle.

And yet. If you’re lucky enough to visit that continent, you will be overwhelmed with hospitality, wisdom, and the very birthplace of humanity. The absolute opposite of a #shithole. Shame on you, 45*. Shame on us.
