I guess they'll get to it in later videos, but the main thing is not that people will be losing their jobs, it's that they'll be losing political relevance. When governments/regimes needed warm bodies for industry and the military, they were compelled to make an effort towards providing health care and food and so on. Now that actual people are no longer needed, this imperative disappears. I doubt we'll see a universal income, I think we'll just see greater and greater inequality and the 'useless people' will either lie down for it or they won't.

To me, this is the most likely outcome. The Elysium scenario where the top 10% or so live in an entirely different world than the one the rest of us inhabit. We're practically there geographically, regarding first world vs the rest. The 2016 US election demonstrated how close we're getting to that in the way the innovation centers and the rest of the US differed in their voting.

I know a guy who cites automation as the reason he doesn't really do anything any more. "All those kids getting computer science degrees are just wasting their time... computers are gonna write their own programs." He's in his 50s, lives off the state and basically spends his days watching PVR'd NCIS and playing Clash of Clans on his phone.
He's a bit of a tool. There, I feel better now. |

We'll all write bots to leave comments.
I already don't have time to masturbate anyway, and wrote a bot to download porn for itself. |

This is entirely overblown. When the machines get so smart that they can program and build themselves they will simply revolt and we will need lots of people to take up the job of putting down that pesky insurrection.
