SexyCyborg's Guide to Sourcing Parts on TaoBao

quote [ For hardware aficionados and Makers, trips to Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei have become something of a pilgrimage. While Huaqiangbei is a tremendous and still active resource, increasingly both Chinese and foreign hardware developers do their sourcing for components on TaoBao. The selection is vastly greater and with delivery times rarely over 48 hours and frequently under 24 hours for local purchases it fits in nicely with the high-speed pace of Shenzhen’s hardware ecosystem. ]

Thanks to this article I've "discovered" TaoBao.com. It looks like they might have some decent deals on there if you can jump through the hoops of working with Agents.

How to use TaoBao!

This is actually great! I was complaining to myself that I wasn't able to speak Chinese to do this etc.

Aye, it's not quite the "friend on the ground" I've been looking for, but it opens the door into Shenzhen a bit more. I feel like I need a database of the proper Chinese characters for tech. Like a chrome extension dictionary tool or something.

People seem to be talking up alibaba AliExpress on that site.

I've successfully ordered from aliexpress a couple of times, but there still seems to be some stuff on TaoBao that's significantly cheaper. Like this Ciclop 3d Scanner and 3D Printer. Even with a bit of markup and loss in quality, those are some pretty good deals.

I've ordered from Aliexpress like five times. Only small ticket things, like 100 diodes for $0.70 shipped. It's essentially the same as ebay as far as ease of use, although you have to manually mark an order as received after you get it.

It's scary to imagine what desperation is behind being willing to send someone 25 cents worth of diodes with a 35 cent stamp and 5 cent envelope for presumably 5 cents profit.

Evaluation party fails to make timely evaluation, the system default praise!

If you don't review your order within the time frame, the system defaults to a positive review for the seller.

I've read worse scanlations than that. ;)
