March for Science, April 22nd

quote [ The March for Science champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. We unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good and for political leaders and policy makers to enact evidence based policies in the public interest. ]

There are marches planned for every State in the US and many countries around the world. Science really is the best method we humans have come up with for ever more accurate understanding of the universe we live in. Please don't let politics force it out in favor of ideological fantasies when it comes to wise governance.

Maybe not directly relevant to this weekend's marches, but I still love this.

Hey look, a march made for me.

Sometimes you just gotta chalk things up to politics as usual, midden. As someone that grew up with DC in your backyard I'm sure you can appreciate that. I'm not a fan of Trump or the Republican majorities, but could you imagine how things would be if we had to live under Putin or in Saudi Arabia?

Kidding, kidding. ;) :D

We unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good and for political leaders and policy makers to enact evidence based policies in the public interest.

Seriously though, why march if you're just going to make excuses when it's a guy you're okay with that's selling you out?
midden said @ 12:41pm GMT on 19th Apr
Yeah, I get what you're saying. I'm not really the marching type, but this is Science! I can't not go.

I don't think it's a question of making excuses when it's a guy you ok with; I think it's more of a global camel's back situation that could get exponentially worse if we don't change direction. Also, the Trump administration isn't so much the problem as a symptom of the deeper problem with society, not just in the US, but around the world.

I get it and I think it's awesome you're going. And I agree with what you're saying, but you were just excusing that behaviour a thread ago! :D

I'm just saying, you undermine your own position when you pull the Politicians are going to Politic card, and people have a tendency to do so with the politicians that they see as being on their side. I mean if you're going to continue to do that, you might as well March For Politicians to Lie Better. It's the ones you agree with that need to be held to an even greater standard or there is no hope for any of us.

"you were just excusing that behaviour a thread ago!"

The Trudeau comment? Yeah, politics is messy. I think we're stuck in a "lesser evil" cycle instead of a "greater good" cycle. Nothing and no one is perfect, but I'd rather see us slowly spiraling up instead of down. Trudeau seems to be nearly balanced between the two.
steele said @ 1:30pm GMT on 19th Apr
Tell me how we're spiraling upward in twenty years when all the Floridian Climate Change refugees are moving back up North towards your way. ;)
midden said @ 1:41pm GMT on 19th Apr
That's just it. We're not spiraling upward. The best we seem able to do these days is a Trudea-like balance, while the majority is clearly headed downward. I think that's what has pushed the science community to take action.
steele said @ 1:55pm GMT on 19th Apr
It's the best we seem to be able to do because we keep settling for the lesser evil that we then refuse to hold accountable... Marching is a great step towards accountability, making lesser evil arguments when someone tries to call a politician out is not.

Is the Trump administration really 'politics as usual'?
Even in a broken, corrupt system we can demand a minimum standard in our political leadership, like at least acknowledging basic scientific principles.

It's a joke. You're missing the context of another thread.
