AI learns to write its own code by stealing from other programs

quote [ Created by researchers at Microsoft and the University of Cambridge, the system, called DeepCoder, solved basic challenges of the kind set by programming competitions. This kind of approach could make it much easier for people to build simple programs without knowing how to write code. ]

My favorite part of these kinds of articles:

But he doesn’t think these systems will put programmers out of a job. With program synthesis automating some of the most tedious parts of programming, he says, coders will be able to devote their time to more sophisticated work.

The predictable and cliche snippet assuring us this isn't the end of an occupation, by telling us they'll be able to do things currently being automated by other teams! :D

It's the end of hard coders, yes. So we adapt, just like how machines replaced human computers.

For some background, this is how I envisioned Star Trek's future was when the characters would magically program new holodeck simulations. I assumed they didn't really know how to program at the Assembly level. It's all abstract for them.

The same deep learning that make what's happening here possible would also make a holodeck world programmable. I've already been researching how to automatically generate models and environments in Unity for future applications. The learning technique is basically there, we're just dialing in how to get the specific results we want. AI has really progressed a lot this past decade, as have the tools available to amateurs like me. For the people who have the cash for datasets and cloud time, the sky's the limit. It's really quite amazing.
