Obama Commutes Bulk of American Hero Chelsea Manning’s Sentence

quote [ WASHINGTON — President Obama on Tuesday largely commuted the remaining prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the army intelligence analyst convicted of an enormous 2010 leak that revealed American military and diplomatic activities across the world, disrupted the administration, and made WikiLeaks, the recipient of those disclosures, famous. ]

Thanks, Obama.

OT but I just read something truly funny on Quora (yeah I know but this is!) Someone asked what Obama should do about Trump. The responder replied that were he Obama, he'd resign on the 19th or 20th and thus make Biden the 46th president. Then Trump would have all of his presidential tchotchkes be wrong and it would piss him off every time he looked at them...or he'd have to have them remade.

I thought Quora was that fungus-based meat substitute they make chicken nuggets out of.

That's probably the best use for those guys, anyway.

He's also commuting the sentences of hundreds of drug offenders.

Yet still, it is not enough!

"non-violent" drug offenders, mostly small-scale crack dealers as near as I can make out from the link.

Without that qualifier, what you wrote above sounds like a right-wing scare headline.

Some of them may be Mexicans!
midden said @ 6:13am GMT on 18th Jan
What, do you mean some of them aren't???
sanepride said @ 12:14am GMT on 18th Jan
No doubt it will be.

It already is.

Meh. I'd rather see Snowden, but I bet that doesn't happen. Obama doesn't have the best track record regarding "transparency" related to 3 letter agencies.
HoZay said @ 11:07pm GMT on 17th Jan
Snowden hasn't applied for clemency. Plus, he's living in Putin's basement, so...
Ankylosaur said @ 11:38pm GMT on 17th Jan
Plus he hasn't been found guilty of anything yet so there's no sentence to commute. Can a president pardon someone for a hypothetical crime they haven't been found guilty of yet?
hellboy said @ 11:53pm GMT on 17th Jan
Yes, he can.

Which will come in handy when Obama pardons Biden for the murders of Trump and Pence.
HoZay said @ 1:37am GMT on 18th Jan
Or whichever Secret Service agent draws the short straw.
midden said @ 6:21am GMT on 18th Jan
I know one should not talk lightly of assassination, but damn, that would make a great book/movie! It would also guarantee that Biden doesn't go down in the history books as just another faceless smudge of a VP like Richard Johnson, Levi Morton or Garret Hobart. He deserves better than that.

"Basement?" Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

I wonder if Julian Assange will keep his promise to be extradited, since the pardon went through?
HoZay said @ 12:03am GMT on 18th Jan [Score:1 Funny]
I'm sure he will, he seems like a stand-up guy.
foobar said @ 12:31am GMT on 18th Jan
It's not actually a pardon, so...

Now all he needs to do is free Edward Snowden
