How Harmonix put Rock Band into a virtual reality world

quote [ Last year, Oculus Studios head Jason Rubin approached the studio about making a new Rock Band installation, specifically for the then-unreleased Rift headset. The companies quickly came to an agreement, and LoPiccolo?s team began work on what would become Rock Band VR in August. As LoPiccolo puts it, they figured out two things right away: if done right, Rock Band in virtual reality would be amazing, and they had no idea how to make it work. ]

I really have high hopes for a VR music experience that doesn't suck balls. This piece tells us why that's so difficult to pull off.

I don't get why they're sticking with toy guitars. I prefer RockSmith, where you can actually learn how to play a real guitar.

The only problem I have with that for VR is that to actually learn you would need to see finger position on a regular basis which would prove difficult with a hmd on. Only way around that would be if each possible position was capacitive and could tell finger presence on the guitar which would be outrageously expensive.

Make learning a separate part of the game, reserving the concert for the VR portion.

I think they want an intuitive experience that feels as if you knew how to play, bypassing the tedious learning process.

Given the number of buttons and the memorization to know which one is which color, you might as well play with an actual guitar with a simplified difficulty (i.e. on Rocksmith's lowest setting, you're strumming a single string at a time). I also think it fits in with the fact that the drummer has to actually drum, the singer has to actually sing, and the keyboard player has to mash keyboard keys.

TL;DR: you can't enjoy the immersion when you are concentrating on the notes.

Come on now, this is a game about rock stars. If it's going to be realistic, it had better suck balls.

You're thinking of the VR "Groupie" DLC.
