SE Digest: Volume 1

quote [ Greetings and good fappin' morning, day, or night to you, Sensible Human Beings. This is the Sensible Endowment Digest: Volume 1 for the website sensibleendowment.com. ]

I had a job cancel today so this morning I did something silly and attempted to make a demo for an SE podcast. It's basically a highlight reel of the last 10 days of activity on here, and I give my personal opinion on a couple things but nothing in depth. Link goes directly to a page that autoplays the MP3 file (or you can right click and "save as" to download to your computer). Running length: 15:08. Labeled SFW but I use the swears.

This was just fucking around, I did no preparation which is quite obvious in the recording. I need the practice for a couple other podcasts I've been trying to get going this summer (but due to other work haven't had the time to record for).

If you think this is stupid/pointless/redundant please downmod me to hell, but if you are into it I could try to do one every couple weeks or so. If you have feedback, suggestions for things I could do, or wanna contribute to the fun in any way leave a comment or PM me.

I have the ability to record phone conversations if any of you are game to chat with me. :)

I liked it. I could see this being a thing.

Cool! I have some other ideas for it that I could try out:

I could pick a particular post and read the full article and any comments left for it.

I could highlight the most underrated (by which I mean low score/comments but high number of clicks) and/or the most downmodded post.

I could go more in depth on my opinions of a post if I have enough of an interest in it.

I could do silly shit like pick a random number, go to that profile page and make something up about that user. Also, porn reviews would be fun.

You still have to jack off a horse referred to a post way back in the day about a breeding tool that was used to procure equine semen. One of those things that the horse would mount and fuck, but it turns out that even if they used it, it would still often require manual stimulation of the horse cock hence why someone once said, "but you still have to jack of a horse" and it took off from there. Another variation is "help your Uncle Jack off his horse."

Wasn't that a worst jobs post? There are worse jobs. I mean, some people might enjoy that. Not me though. I totally wouldn't want to do that. I swear. Hey, that's a nice horse over there brb.
steele said @ 12:40pm GMT on 25th Aug
Maybe? I think it might've been two posts. A worst job post and then a few months later a post for the tool with demonstration videos?

For some reason I imagined you having a hillbilly drawl. Gotta say I'm a little disappointed.
JWWargo said @ 9:31pm GMT on 23rd Aug
Haha, was that assumed because I'm from Idaho? Most Idahoans have the "Pacific Northwestern Accent", which I didn't know existed until someone pointed it out to me. The tell is how hard we stress the consonant in words that end in them (like "milk", "flag", "neat"...etc).
arrowhen said @ 10:43pm GMT on 23rd Aug
I spent most of my life in the Pacific Northwest, now I live in Louisiana with my girlfriend from Philadelphia. I might have to listen just to hear normal English again.
sanepride said @ 11:24pm GMT on 23rd Aug
Didn't know you were from Idaho. Just made the assumption based your screen nic and cause I thought you had a kind of itinerant hobo lifestyle. But then again, most hobos probably don't have the means to buy microphones and do podcasts.

I was mostly nomadic for 6 years as a hitchhiking street storyteller. I have been living in Hawaii on and off since 2011. Currently residing indoors.

You didn't cover the fact that I've finally worn out all my trousers after about eight years, and had to go and buy some new ones. The old ones had button flies, the new ones zips, and I'm struggling with the habit that causes me to unbutton my belt every time I want to take a wee.

If you play the beverly hillbillies theme instrumental in the background, it really helps sell the hillbilly and old man Sanepride voices.
JWWargo said @ 8:03am GMT on 24th Aug
I haven't figured out how to record the output of my laptop with my current USB audio interface (AVID MBox 3) and recording software (Reaper) setup yet. I set a track to record the output in Reaper, play something (like a YouTube video of the Beverly Hillbillies theme) and nothing is captured. I'm not sure how the signal is routed, tbh, only that the Mbox takes over as my speaker output when it's plugged in.
shiftace said @ 7:40pm GMT on 24th Aug
couldn't you use a browser plugin to record audio file of the youtube video and then mix that in with some audio editing software?
JWWargo said @ 8:41pm GMT on 24th Aug
Yes, right now whenever I want to add pre-recorded material I need a separate audio file I can insert into the track, but having the ability to just play back stuff while recording would be a huge time saver and would open up the possibility of doing live shows.
arrowhen said @ 9:29pm GMT on 24th Aug
You mean, like, you're talking into the mic and recording and you want to be able to hit a button at will to play an audio clip into the mix? That should be easy to accomplish in REAPER. I've never needed to do that before so I'm not exactly how, but, being REAPER, there's probably like five different ways. I'm not in front of my PC right now, but I can poke around with it when I get home.

One way that springs to mind is to load your clips into a VST sampler or REAPER's built-in Reasamplomatic5000 thingy, set that track to record its own output, and trigger the samples with a MIDI controller or REAPER's virtual keyboard.
JWWargo said @ 9:51pm GMT on 24th Aug
I meant I want to be able to play something from my laptop, like a Youtube vid online, and have the output be recorded onto a track in Reaper as I'm playing it.

I'm at work right now but when I get home tonight I'll grab some screenshots and show you what I'm working with.
arrowhen said @ 10:31pm GMT on 24th Aug
I've never tried it myself, but I see Virtual Audio Cable mentioned frequently for this kind of thing.
JWWargo said @ 8:59pm GMT on 25th Aug
I came home and immediately went to bed last night. Supposed to record later today with a friend, when I have my shit set up I'll show you what I'm working with. Will try out that program, too, but I feel like there should be a simple way to route the laptop audio to a recording track inside Reaper.
arrowhen said @ 9:33pm GMT on 25th Aug
It USED to be easy in older versions of Windows; you just went into your audio properties and set "stereo mix" (or something like that) as one of your recording inputs. But they did away with that starting with, I think, Vista, because it could be used to bypass DRM.

Nowadays it looks like unless your audio interface gives you that ability in its driver settings (apparently some do), you need third-party software to give you that level of over your PCs internal audio routing.

Ah sweet, glad you dig it. Knowing there are people out there wanting to listen is motivation to keep going.
