Performance artist invited strangers to touch her breasts and genitals

quote [ Swiss artist Milo Moire, who travels Europe inviting complete strangers to touch her genitals, was arrested in Trafalgar Square, London, following a complaint from a member of the public. ]

I am sitting her kind of dumbfounded. I think I see her statement? Yet I can't imagine trusting the public in this way.

I think the piece in the museum was much more effective at conveying her message. The juxtaposition of the live nude woman with all the nudity in the art really drives the point home.

Marina Abramovic has been doing stuff like this for years. In galleries, so less public, but still. Her best know was standing still while people chose objects to either cause pleasure or pain to be used on her body. So they tickled her with feathers, used scissors to cut off her clothes, etc. It ended when someone held a gun to her head.

Sorry, they cancelled the performance/exhibition when somebody brought in a gun and held it to her head, or it was scripted that once somebody choose to pick up the provided gun and hold it to her head, the performance was over because she had been symbolically killed?

Abramović placed on a table 72 objects that people were allowed to use (a sign informed them) in any way that they chose. Some of these were objects that could give pleasure, while others could be wielded to inflict pain, or to harm her. Among them were a rose, a feather, honey, a whip, olive oil, scissors, a scalpel, a gun and a single bullet.

....

Initially, members of the audience reacted with caution and modesty, but as time passed (and the artist remained passive) people began to act more aggressively. As Abramović described it later: "What I learned was that ... if you leave it up to the audience, they can kill you. ... I felt really violated: they cut up my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away. It created an aggressive atmosphere. After exactly 6 hours, as planned, I stood up and started walking toward the audience. Everyone ran away, to escape an actual confrontation."

The scalpel sounds scarier than the gun.

Touch her genitals? In public? Not without wet wipes. No thanks!

I have really mixed feelings about this. I believe in total bodily autonomy for women, so I think she should be completely free to do this. At the same time though, I don't think this is a very strong artistic or political statement. People wanting to touch a conventionally beautiful woman's genitals? *shocking*

I think I get it: getting arrested is an essential part of the art. She's being arrested for allowing strangers to touch her genitals consensually - whereas women all over the world have great difficulty getting the police to arrest people for nonconsensual genital contact.

Or maybe I'm overthinking it.

Sounds about right. That and shining a light on prudish behavior I think.

I think a really interesting aspect of this is that she assumed/said it was the wife, of one of the men touching her, that reported her. That seems like it slipped under the radar but I think that's an interesting side note.

Police almost always go for the low hanging fruit. It's hard to prove guilt against someone for non-consent, when it's one person's word against the other. Arresting someone for publicly allowing others to touch them is easy to prove. It's a fucked up world we live it.

Half the shit Milo Moire does she gets away with because she's beautiful.

For reals though- back in the day you could like throw rocks and flog a person, but show some boobies and society breaks down and the police are called in.
