Cyclone Winston wreaks destruction in Fiji

quote [ Authorities assess damage in Fiji after the most powerful cyclone flattened whole areas, killing at least five people. ... It destroyed hundreds of homes and cut electricity lines. There are reports of entire villages flattened. ]

Winston was one of the biggest storms to ever be recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. And it smashed straight into Fiji. There's ten dead, but I suspect that will rise and reports come in from the the more remote islands.

It's very interesting that this storm is being described as one of the biggest ever, just one year after one of the most powerful Atlantic storms ever and two years after another of the most powerful Pacific storms ever. Climatologists generally refrain from tying any one storm or weather event, no matter how dramatic, to climate change- but if nearly every year we see a pattern of 'most powerful storms ever', that could be considered a serious climatic trend.

Well, it's the biggest ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. And recording didn't start down here until much later than storms in the Northern Hemisphere.

That said, my personal feeling is that climate change is going to mean more and bigger storms as oceans warm.

you can probably change that sentence to present tense.
