quote [ Ling, an immigrant mother, faces an out of control hoarding compulsion and crumbling marriage. She stumbles upon waltz lessons and reclaims her life through dance. ]
It?s TStryker, the actor/filmmaker/Trains guy (My first job was saying "Trains" in an IBM commercial). I'm currently working on my second short film inspired by my mom about hoarding. It's gotten so bad that my dad has moved out and their house is almost unlivable. I've tried other ways to help to no avail. I made a short video and would love the SE community to take a look and to spread the word about the film! If you're interested, I've posted a few of the other things I've done in the extended. Thanks for your support! Oh and if you have any questions, please ask!
In my 17 years being on SE, a lot of things have happened to me and it's funny that this community has been with me the entire time. Not even my closest friends right now have known me that long! What does that say about me keeping friends? Hmm....
My first short film 'The Problem of Gravity': http://youtu.be/4wjzYl07tRg The IBM 'Trains' commercial: http://youtu.be/QUMbLcjL0jc?t=9s My Law & Order: SVU scene: http://youtu.be/f8SdsAZPt6U A cheese commercial I did: http://youtu.be/vuvzdc1YHPo?t=19s My scene in NBC's The Blacklist that didn't have my face in it: http://youtu.be/U4A9exumni4 My reel with a few other projects: http://youtu.be/Tk4lT8corCA I'm also an artist and this piece made the rounds online: http://trevorzhou.com/art/street/installations/

I strongly support a +1 Worthy Self-Link mod, because I think community members who create cool things should be encouraged to share them with us.
The old paradigm was "don't link your own stuff... but if you do, maybe you'll get lucky and we'll upmod it anyway." I'd like to see that change to "go ahead and link your own stuff and let us decide if we think it's worthy or not." We have a lot of creative people here and personally, I'd like to see more of what they have to offer without them having to break the "rules" and hope for the best every time they want to share something with us. |

I think it would be wise to have self-posts be a category that can be filtered out.

Disagree. The categories are for content. Self-post is an attribute, not a content label. For instance, the content of this self-link is Arts.
Instead, it would be best to never admit something is a self-link. Post your own stuff, don't tell anyone it's yours, and then get an honest reaction to it. |

To me, that kind of shady marketing bullshit is the epitome of unworthy self-linking. If you make something you're proud of and you want to share it with your virtual friends and neighbors, that's awesome! But if you just want to sneak around and use us for free advertising, that's both insulting and pathetic: it means you have so little respect for the community that you're willing to try and trick us into buying shit you don't even believe in enough to sign your name to. Fuck that noise. Also, if you want an honest reaction, you could always just ask for one. I don't know if you've noticed, but folks around here aren't typically shy about expressing their opinions. |

The anonymous self-link has no attached social pressure or obligation. Let's say you're my friend and you post something I know is yours. If I don't like it, I can't/won't be honest because it will hurt you. I am far from the only one. SE isn't strangers. It is a tight knit community where people will feel an obligation to upmod content based on the poster. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I tend to feel very guilty ignoring or not liking something that someone I care about worked hard on.
If you think anyone can use this site for free advertising, you have no idea what kind of traffic SE has historically pulled down. You'd be better off flyering your own neighborhood to get exposure. SE is a web community of people who (at least pretend to) give a shit about eachother and the things we have to say. At least, that's how I see it. |

Hey, I'm not saying it's a GOOD marketing strategy, but it has been done. There was a dude on the old site (don't remember his name) who had like 7 posts over the span of a few years, all of which were about artsy film projects he was working on. Another guy signed up to talk about his porn site (which as I recall was fairly well received, actually) but didn't really participate in the community beyond that. There have probably been others too that I'm just not remembering.
You're right, though: this IS a close-knit community of people who care about each other... and you just advocated lying to them in order to get what you want. What's up with that? :) As far as honest feedback from friends goes, I think it can be hard to get but more useful when you do get it. If we're friends and you show me something you've created, I'm probably just going to look for something to like about it and compliment you on that -- because let's face it, that's about all the "criticism" most people want. But if you ASK me to be brutally honest and help you find ways to make it better, I'm more that happy to tell you, in agonizing detail, exactly how ugly your baby is... and because you're my friend and I'm invested in your happiness and success, I'm going to devote a lot more time and attention to the task than I would for some random stranger. |

Yeah, doesn't really work that way. The way the site determines which mod a post gets labeled as that it does a count of each individual mod type (like original) and which ever one has the most wins out at the the post's mod.
So the way to a +10 Unworthy Self Link is as follows: 1. Have everyone mod a different plus mod so that the site decides on a +10 with no mod type, because they're all equal. 2. Have a few people mod -1 Unworthy Self Link so that becomes the defining mod. 3. Then the remaining mods need to be a variety of of upmod types to ensure that no other mod types try to compete with the Unworthy Self Link as the mod score goes back up. These steps can be done in any order but ultimately it comes to Unworthy Self Link needs to be the prevailing mod type while the upmods are such a hodgepodge that they don't interfere with the effort. |
