A really interesting project, but the unit cost is going to have to come down a lot from circa. €300 to really make it accessible in the countries and informal collection economies they're looking at I suspect.

There are some very tried and tested flowchart-based approaches where you can use a hot wire and bucket of water to get a pretty good identification. Plus, after about 10 minutes of looking at things you can get very good at differentiating between PET and polyolephins which covers a large proportion of what informal pickers are dealing with.

Yeah, but just wait until David Attenborough finds a panda that choked to death on one of these scanners…
