It really shows how civil our society is that the people that profit off these programs can sleep soundly at night with no fear that one of the hundreds of people they've screwed over will seek vengeance.

I'm not sure if civil is the word I would use. Submissive seems to make more sense when you consider we started as a slaver society and we still carry a lot of the traditions and mythologies from that era.
