Baseball great Henry ‘Hank’ Aaron, 86, passes into history

quote [ In March of 1954, with his place in the major leagues far from assured, Hank Aaron was granted a start in a Milwaukee exhibition game versus Boston, only because Bobby Thomson, the regular left fielder and Aaron’s idol, had just broken his ankle. ]

I was never THAT in to baseball, but living in the ATL you couldn't help but be familiar with Hank and his efforts in the area.

He never hit 50 home runs in a season. He really wasn't ever the best player in baseball (being Willie Mays' contemporary makes that hard). But he was a model of consistency and durability, making 21 consecutive all-star games (with only the last two being lifetime achievement awards, the first 19 were 100%
earned).

And off the field, not only was he a class act, he killed it in his Futurama episode.
